Donald Trump leads Jeb Bush by a 21-17 percent margin in the GOP presidential race in Florida, according to a new Quinnipiac poll released on Thursday. The Trump surge in Florida was first reflected in a St. Pete Polls survey conducted three weeks ago, and has been maintained in subsequent Florida polls. In a similar Quinnipiac poll conducted in Florida in June, Bush was at 20 percent support, while Trump was at just 3 percent. Marco Rubio and Dr. Ben Carson are tied for third…

Several GOP presidential candidates support ending birthright citizenship; what about Florida GOP Senate candidates?

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The issue of denying citizenship for children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants has always been considered somewhat of a fringe idea, even among some of the biggest hawks fighting illegal immigration. The issue has come to the forefront this week after GOP presidential contender Donald Trump unveiled his white paper on immigration on Sunday, which included eliminating automatic birthright citizenship. On the campaign trail on Monday,  Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker immediately signaled his support for the plan (before backing off).…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Four years ago, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty was considered a strong challenger to Mitt Romney for the GOP presidential nomination. Then the Iowa Straw Poll happened. Walker has been considered all year by many commentators (and this reporter) as among the top-tier candidates for the nomination. And nowhere has the Wisconsin governor been strongest…

Scott Walker is counting steps on his FitBit. Jeb Bush swears by the Paleo diet. Bobby Jindal is a “gym rat.” With long travel days and a fresh slab of cherry pie never far away, the campaign trail is notoriously unhealthy. But many 2016 presidential candidates are striving to make smart lifestyle choices as they tour the small town diners and pizza places of the early voting states. “I try to do at least 10,000 steps a day,” said Walker,…

A look at the big GOP post-debate winners and losers

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Carly Fiorina seems to be the biggest winner in polling since the GOP debate last week, says Harry Enten of fivethrityeight.com. “She gained ground in every poll taken after the debate,” he writes. “In five of the seven polls, the gain was six percentage points or more.” Scott Walker was the biggest loser. “This one surprised me a little, but the polling is clear. Walker is the only candidate who lost ground in every single post-debate poll.” Donald Trump gets a…

“Has ‘The Donald’ Peaked?” That’s the headline of a new national public opinion survey of Republican voters from Rasmussen Reports that was released Tuesday afternoon. The survey shows New York City real estate magnate Donald Trump continues to lead the crowded GOP field of presidential candidates with 17 percent support. That’s a nine-percentage- point drop from a similar poll taken approximately two weeks ago and before last week’s debate, which had Trump up with 26 percent support nationally. The new survey has…
