in 2017/Top Headlines by

Reports continued to surface over the weekend that Joe Biden is calling old friends and potential allies about the possibility that he could enter into the Democratic presidential race. In some quarters of the Democratic Party, there are increasing concerns about the viability of front-runner Hillary Clinton‘s candidacy, as reports of the current “emailgate” scandal continue to emerge. Although she maintains a strong lead nationally and in most states against Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator’s rising poll numbers in New Hampshire…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The politically divisive cultural war over abortion rights have resurfaced with a vengeance this summer. The latest flashpoint has centered around a series of edited videotapes that appear to show administrators from Planned Parenthood detailing how fetal tissue drawn from abortions was used in medical research. On Friday, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson moved to cut the state’s funding of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, becoming the fourth state in the country to do so in the past month. Florida Gov. David Jolly reiterates his opposition to closing down Gitmo

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

In the political equivalent of pounding an underhanded thrown softball into the bleachers, Pinellas County congressman and GOP U.S. Senate candidate David Jolly came out today against the Obama administration’s latest attempt to close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and transfer detainees to U.S. prisons. “The closing of Gitmo would only embolden the enemies of freedom who wish to do us harm,” said Jolly. “At a time when terrorism continues to spread throughout the world, we must…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

First of all, let me give a public welcome to the newest addition to the Florida Politics/SaintPetersBlog family, James Rosica, late of the Tampa Tribune. I am looking forward to reading his reports. The advent of the super PACS, we’ve been told, will keep presidential candidates around a lot longer than before, since there’s a separate venue for fundraising. The idea is that a few rich millionaires can singlehandedly keep a candidate alive. We’re about to see if that’s going to work…

Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission executive director Kyle Cockream wants to emphasize to the public that his agency has never wanted to boot Uber from operating in the country. He just wants them to abide by a few of the agency’s rules, which the popular ridesharing company has indicated it’s not interested in. On Friday, a Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge denied the PTC’s request for a preliminary injunction that could have possibly taken Uber drivers off of local roads. “Interestingly, the PTC stated that…

Five days before the Florida Legislature returns to Tallahassee to work on redrawing eight congressional district lines, two committees responsible for completing what is known as a “base map” have released it to the public. It shows that those committees have followed the directions of the Florida Supreme Court, which said in its ruling that eight congressional districts were drawn in violation of the state constitution. The court ruled that Kathy Castor’s District 14 seat in Hillsborough County should not be expanded across the bay…
