in 2017/Top Headlines by

A national poll released by Public Policy Polling on Wednesday afternoon shows Donald Trump leading the field of GOP presidential contenders, but his descent may be beginning. Trump leads the field with 19 percent, followed closely by Scott Walker at 17 percent. Jeb Bush was next at 12 percent, Marco Rubio and Dr. Ben Carson at 10 percent, Mike Huckabee at 8 percent, with Ted Cruz, Carly Florina and Rand Paul at 4 percent. John Kasich and Chris Christie are at 3 percent,…

Rhode Islanders’ for Marco Rubio for President group forms

in 2017/Top Headlines by

As Barack Obama proved in 2008, it clearly pays to campaign in as many states as possible in a contested primary. So while the political campaigns are centered on early voting states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the Providence Journal reported today that a Rhode Islanders’ for Marco Rubio for President group has been formed. The paper reports that it will be chaired by Gary Sasse, a one-time top aide in the administration of former Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri, and…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.22.15 — Stop saying John Kasich needs to be in the 1st debate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

John Kasich announced his candidacy at Ohio State University on Tuesday. When you look at his resume and his center-right political persona, he could/should be a top-tier contender. But nobody seems to be talking about that today. Instead, the focus is on the fact that he’s entering the race some seven months later than Jeb Bush did. Excuse me, when Bush said he was “testing the waters” but set up a political action committee that was able to raise over…

Hillsborough Democrat Naze Sahebzamani to take on Ross Spano in HD 59 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although Eastern Hillsborough County has been the graveyard for Democrats in legislative races for awhile now, the party came awfully close back in 2012 to winning the House District 59 seat. That’s when Gail Gottlieb fell just short in attempting to defeat Republican Ross Spano for the open seat, ultimately losing 51-49 percent. The district covers Brandon, Riverview and Valrico. Spano easily won re-election in 2014 over Democrat Donna Lee Fore, and will no doubt be considered the early favorite going into…

New WaPo-ABC News poll shows persistent resistance from conservatives for Jeb Bush

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Although the big headlines coming out of The Washington Post/ABC News poll released Monday afternoon were all about Donald Trump leading the rest of the GOP presidential field by double-digits, it also indicates that Jeb Bush‘s month-long momentum may be ebbing slightly. Trump leads the field with 24 points in the national survey, Scott Walker is second with 13 percent, and Bush is third at 12 percent. Mike Huckabee is fourth in the race with 8 percent, Marco Rubio is…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.21.15 — Bill McCollum isn’t seriously thinking of running for Senate. Is he?

in Top Headlines by

I was going to opine on John Kasich entering the GOP presidential contest this morning, but let’s get to that tomorrow. Instead, let’s talk about the Florida U.S. Senate race, now that David Jolly is officially in the race, along with U.S. Ron DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and retired CIA contractor Todd Wilcox. Lately the conventional wisdom from at least two Florida political reporters/analysts is that with such a relatively unknown field, former Central Florida U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum could be viable if…

Kathy Castor says the economic sanctions on Cuba need to go

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For the first time since severing ties in 1961, the U.S. and Cuba reopened embassies in each other’s capitals today. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla traveled to the Cuban Embassy in Washington to raise his country’s flag, an event that was broadcast live on the island’s state-run TV. Tampa Bay area Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Castor has been a passionate advocate for liberalizing relations with the Communist island since she traveled there in 2013.  She attended today’s flag-raising ceremony at the Cuban embassy,…
