Janet Cruz calls on Steve Crisafulli to make new redistricting process ‘totally open’

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

There has been nary a word said by any of Florida’s legislative leaders since the Florida Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Legislature’s redrawing of eight congressional districts in 2012 was unconstitutional, and ordered them to redraw those districts within the next 100 days. While the GOP leadership contemplates their next move, Tampa Democratic House member Janet Cruz is giving Speaker of the House Steve Crisafulli some helpful advice. In a letter sent to Crisafulli this morning and made…

Donald Trump in virtual tie with Jeb Bush in new Reuters poll

in 2017 by

While commentators on the Sunday talk shows continued to deride his candidacy, apparently enough Republican primary voters like what Donald Trump is talking about on the campaign trail. A Reuters-Ipsos poll released on Saturday shows that The Donald trails only Jeb Bush in a survey of national GOP presidential voters. Bush is at 16.1 percent, Trump 15.8 percent. Trump’s controversial (if not downright racist) comments regarding Mexicans coming to America has made him the number one story on political cable news…

Will GOP-led Legislature appeal gerrymandering case?

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Twenty-four hours after the Florida Supreme Court’s major decision calling for eight of the state’s 27 congressional districts to be redrawn, it’s unknown what the leaders of the Florida Legislature will do in response. The court gave them 100 days to respond to its call to redraw those eight districts, which would ultimately affect the district lines of all 27 districts. Jacksonville area Democratic U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown may pursue legal action because her uniquely drawn District 5 is one of those districts…

Alan Grayson is running for the U.S. Senate. “This is going to be the first real political race of the 21st Century,” said the Orlando Democratic congressman as he made the announcement this morning during a televised interview with WKMG-TV, the CBS affiliate in Orlando. He compared its national appeal to Elizabeth Warren‘s successful run for the Senate in Massachusetts in 2012.  “It’s going to be famous. What people see of us doing in this race is going to live until the…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.9.15 — Pier politics returns yet again in St. Pete

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

You’ve gotta love Tom Lambdon. Well, let me take that back. You don’t have to love anybody. In fact, there are many people in St. Petersburg who would hope to never hear this man’s name mentioned in polite company ever again. But civic activists like Lambdon wouldn’t get anywhere if they weren’t representing others who need someone to lead them. I mention the Safety Harbor resident because the St. Pete City Council is meeting today to consider contracts for Pier…

NRSC ‘confident’ GOP will hold on to Florida Senate seat in 2016

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Earlier this week, POLITICO speculated that the Democrats have a “narrow” path to recapture the U.S. Senate next year, which appears to be a much friendlier year in terms of victories compared to 2014 (when they lost nine seats) or 2018, when they must defend seats in red states like Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia. One the biggest states up for grabs at this early juncture is Florida, where incumbent Marco Rubio will not be on the ballot. The field is still being…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.7.15 — Last call for change with Hillsborough County Board size?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Hillsborough County Charter Review Board meets again tonight at 6 p.m. at the County Center, where advocates for a several years-long push to expand or change the configuration of the seven-member Board of County Commissioners will have one last chance to persuade the majority that such a change is needed. The odds are stacked against them. The purveyors of status quo, none more prominent than former County Commissioner and now Charter Board member herself Jan Platt, remains fixated on keeping…
