U.S. Supreme Court to Seminole Tribe: Pay your utility tax

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The U.S. Supreme Court has effectively decided that the Seminole Tribe of Florida has to pay its utility tax—just like everybody else. The court on Monday, without comment, decided not to consider an appeal of a case in which the tribe contested having to pay tax on its electric and other utility bills. That lets stand an 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling against the tribe. The Seminoles said having to pay such tax violated their tribal sovereignty. The…

Outpaced and outfoxed, the Seminole Tribe of Florida dropped its bid to block the disclosure of financial information about its casinos. The tribe made the move Friday, shortly after POLITICO printed details of the deposition of casino executive Jim Allen. He runs the tribe’s gambling concerns. The political news website reported that Allen said the Seminoles made $2.4 billion last year, and nearly all of it came from the gambling business. Much of that money was given to paid petition gatherers. The amendment would “ensure…

Sunshine State gambling #fails: A short history

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Just as it always does in recent years, a legislative effort to revisit the state’s gambling laws bloated and sunk in the waning days of a legislative session. After months of negotiations, a proposed new “compact,” or gambling agreement, between the state and the Seminole Tribe of Florida failed Friday when the House indefinitely postponed the measure. But Florida has a history of failure, at least in recent years, when it comes to addressing gambling. The state’s inaction even caused…
