Philip Garrett’s campaign finance numbers don’t add up

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Philip Garrett doesn’t seem to understand how campaign finance reports work. At least that’s the take-away from his latest treasurer’s report filed at City Hall Friday. According to the report covering September 14 through October 4, Garrett listed $420 in monetary contributions with his total raised to date listed as the same amount. Likewise, he reported spending $579.47 during that period with no other expenses prior to the reporting dates. First, in the previous reports…

Despite campaign controversy, Lisa Wheeler-Brown out-raises Will Newton in latest reports

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If campaign finance reports are any indication, Lisa Wheeler-Brown supporters are unfazed by recent reports highlighting a series of campaign finance missteps that could violate Florida election laws. Reports filed Friday show Wheeler-Brown raised $11,700 between September 14 through October 4th. During that same time frame, Wheeler-Brown’s opponent, Will Newton, raised $9,415. Will Newton is running against Wheeler-Brown to replace his brother in District 7. The mailer compares Will Newton to his brother and makes the argument that Newton 2.0 would be repeat of the current Newton who’s all about saying ‘No.’ “Moving our city forward…

Will Newton’s back taxes were not from a personal business

St. Pete City Council candidate Will Newton is answering questions about more than $32,000 in back taxes he owed several years ago. Newton was assessed two liens stemming from 2004-2006 and 2007-2009. Both liens were paid off in 2012. In a Tampa Bay Times article highlighting the issue, Newton wouldn’t answer where the back taxes came from. According to the Internal Revenue Service, the back taxes resulted from “small business/self-employed.” The Times reported that neither Newton’s work as a firefighter…

St. Pete City Council Chair Charlie Gerdes asked that his request to amend a resolution sent to the Pinellas County Commission be withdrawn. Gerdes had planned on asking commissioners to refrain from allocating the portion of bed tax dollars formerly used on Tropicana Field debt service until a decision is made regarding the Tampa Bay Rays future in Pinellas County. There’s about $6.5 million a year that could be used to help fund a new stadium should the Rays choose…
