Mail ballots for November’s St. Pete election trickle in, leaves space for more campaigning

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mail ballots have gone out to more than 66,000 voters for the November 3 Municipal Elections that include St. Pete’s three City Council battles and four ballot questions. So far only 2,680 of those have been returned with less than a month to go before Election Day. That means candidates have plenty of time to bombard registered voters who requested ballots but have not returned them. Some voters received a mailer from City Council chair Charlie Gerdes this week. It’s…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Building a stadium for the Atlanta Braves to use for Spring Training is likely hinged on what St. Pete City Council decides on the long-looming Tampa Bay Rays issue. The Braves are interested in playing ball in St. Pete during training season, but Pinellas county commissioners are in a pickle over whether or not to support plans to build them a facility at the Toytown lot that used to be a landfill. Here’s the deal. Building a sports complex for…

With less than a month to go before Election Day, St. Pete residents are still largely undecided on who to elect to City Council. Even in the two races including incumbents some 40 percent of those polled haven’t decided who to vote for. Amid campaign finance controversy, Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s lead shrinks to within the margin of error

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s lead in the polls has shrunk to just two points over opponent Will Newton, within the margin of error. She had a seven-point lead following the primary. The change is likely the result of a series of controversies showing Wheeler-Brown had used campaign funds to undergo dental work, a possible misuse of funds. Following that, SaintPetersblog uncovered the expense had gone misreported for more than six months as office space. That information led to…

Monica Abbott hopes to unseat Charlie Gerdes so she can be a full-time representative

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Monica Abbott is self-funding a campaign to unseat St. Pete City Council chair Charlie Gerdes … to the tune of $11,000. Abbott wants a shot at representing West St. Pete residents in District 1 because she thinks Gerdes isn’t paying enough attention to the district. “He’s more for the city,” Abbott said. “That’s more being a council member at-large.” Abbott complained that Gerdes failed to secure Penny for Pinellas funds for a Pinellas Trail expansion in their district. She said he…

Charlie Gerdes hopes for City Council win with record low fundraising

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council chair Charlie Gerdes wants to earn his re-election with as little funding from supporters as possible. “I’m trying to see if I can set a record for the least cost per vote,” Gerdes said. And he’s well on his way. Gerdes has raised just over $4,000 as of the most recent campaign finance reports that cover activity through mid-September. His opponent, Monica Abbott, has about triple the funds with $12,425 raised to date, including an $11,000…

Direct mail roundup: Lisa Wheeler-Brown mailer targets law enforcement and civilians

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In what was a busy day for campaign mailers, District 7 City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown added to mailboxes with a positive mailer Friday. One side shows the candidate walking hand-in-hand with two young boys down a sidewalk next to a park. The mailer touts “a safer St. Pete for our families.” The mailer than goes on to paraphrase Wheeler-Brown’s “tragic story” in which her son, Cabretti, was murdered in 2008. Following his death, Wheeler-Brown made it her mission to…
