Kornell’s opponent, Phillip Garrett, raised $800 during the latest reporting period marking his first contributions to date. Garrett pulled in another $231.75 of in-kind contributions from himself. Tampa Tribune dumps Lisa Wheeler-Brown, now endorses Will Newton

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Tribune has rescinded its endorsement for Lisa Wheeler-Brown and instead backed Will Newton for St. Pete City Council District 7. In a list of endorsements published Monday morning, The Tribune pointed to information uncovered by SaintPetersblog. “Recently revealed discrepancies in her campaign finance reports raise questions about her judgment,” the latest write-up read. That’s as much detail as the endorsement dives into, however. The Tribune editorial board is referring to a series of campaign finance mishaps including a…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown supporters are sticking by her side despite a barrage of controversy surrounding recent changes to campaign finance records. Supporters of Wheeler-Brown’s campaign are calling the allegations petty and point to a riff between current campaign consultants and one who previously worked on her campaign. While campaign supporters and volunteers have rallied behind their candidate on social media responses to a questionable expenditure for dental work, misreporting on that expense and late-filed amendments showing in-kind contributions previously unreported, there…

Midtown nonprofit may have illegally given office space to Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A St. Pete nonprofit that serves underprivileged youth and others in the Midtown community may be breaking an Internal Revenue Code and be at risk of IRS sanctions. Advantage Village Academy offered space free of charge to St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown to use periodically as office space for her campaign. Under any definition, that is considered an in-kind contribution. But there’s a problem. Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations are explicitly prohibited from contributing, in-kind or otherwise, to political campaigns.…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign finance reporting amended — for third time this week

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For the third time in less than a week and the second time in one day, Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s campaign staff filed correction to previous treasurer’s reports. The latest round of updates include corrections to previous corrections that listed the wrong dates and numbers for some of the reporting periods. An amendment filed at City Hall to Wheeler-Brown’s growingly complex campaign finance file showed she had brought in $993 between April 1 and July 19. First, those dates actually combine two…
