A New York college that went on lockdown over a report of a gun on campus says the weapon turned out to be a light saber. Students and staff members at Farmingdale State College on Long Island were told to shelter in place Wednesday while police investigated a report that someone was assembling a rifle in a school parking lot. College spokeswoman Kathryn Coley says the rifle was actually a “Star Wars” toy. Farmingdale State is part of the State…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.29.16 – #OscarsSoLong

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I was delighted to read online in the middle of the night that “Spotlight,” the Tom McCarthy directed film about the Boston Globe’s investigations into the Catholic Church’s sexual abuse scandal, won Best Picture at the 2016 Academy Awards last night. I read about it, because I wasn’t staying up past midnight to find out who took home the award. Seriously, can the Oscars start earlier in the future? The Super Bowl starts at 6:30 p.m. for a reason –…

(UPDATE) Shortly after 8:30 a.m., the Oscar nominations will be announced from Hollywood, and yes, I actually give a fig. As an inveterate moviegoer, I still get excited about what the Establishment thinks about the product it puts out every year. Interestingly, while the Oscars are still among the most viewed television broadcasts globally every year, they always seem to drop in the ratings most years. This year, Chris Rock is hosting, but what I’ll be interested to see today is…

There were goodbyes (Jon Stewart, David Letterman, “Mad Men”) and hellos (Adele!). “Star Wars” reawakened, and a ballerina and an unheralded Founding Father both hit the zeitgeist. But the pop-culture moment that fascinated us most? That had to be the emergence of Caitlyn Jenner. Herewith, our annual, very selective trip down pop culture memory lane: JANUARY: Remember we began the year talking about North Korea? At the GOLDEN GLOBES, Tina Fey welcomes the TV audience to honor “all the movies that North…

“Star Wars” named AP’s Entertainer of the Year

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

“Star Wars” isn’t just strong. It’s unstoppable. The revival of the nearly 40-year-old space saga has already dominated the box office and toy shelves. Now, it’s also been selected as The Associated Press Entertainer of the Year and is amassing support for Academy Awards consideration. “Personally, it’s been three years of feeling privileged to be part of something that’s bigger than all of us,” filmmaker J.J. Abrams told the AP in an interview. “This accolade is very much appreciated and…
