As Shawn Harrison switches allegiances, Chris Sprowls now has majority of class in Speaker’s race

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Though not quite as protracted (and definitely not as written about), another leadership battle in the Legislature seems to have settled after days of arm-twisting, pledge-wrangling and nose-counting. State Rep. Chris Sprowls, a Palm Harbor Republican, reportedly has swayed enough defectors from fellow Rep. Eric Eisnaugle, an Orlando Republican, to make Sprowls the likely Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives after the 2020 elections. Call it the saga of the “deja-coup,” which comes a month after the Senate settled on Joe Negron as President-designate to succeed Andy Gardiner after…

Lauren Book and the empty box

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Most first-time candidates take a while to get their campaigns up and running. They generally need a few weeks of sorting out details, getting used to the lay of the land, setting up events, and just getting into the rhythm of making calls and so on. I urge you to personally support Jack and to do whatever you can to assist him with his campaign for the State Senate so that he…

Jack Latvala’s raisin’ money like it’s 1999

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Damn, Jack’s back. Not so former Senator Jack Latvala raised $229,750 in his first quarter back on the campaign trail. $229,750! He’s on pace to outraise Marco Rubio, maybe even some of the other major statewide candidates. Not that it much matters, but he’s got $223K still left on hand, meaning Jack’s running a tight ship. Memo to Nina Hayden: please, please reconsider your bid for the state Senate. We love you on the Pinellas School Board. And if you…

Congratulations, Charlie

in Peter/Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

First of all, congratulations to my dear friend Governor-elect Charlie Crist. His Senate campaign was the first that I ever worked on, so I owe much to the silver-haired, silver-tongued favorite son of St. Petersburg. I first met Charlie when he came to my high school to discuss the Youth in Government program I was involved in; not soon after he invited me and my friend Estella to be pages in the state Senate. From then after Charlie has been…
