Can an African-American win in Tarpon Springs? Can the Stonewall Democrats win another race? And other intriguing questions from Pinellas’ elections

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Tomorrow is Election Day tomorrow in Pinellas. Check back often with Saint Petersblog for updates, photos and results from interesting races in Clearwater, Gulfport, Oldsmar and Tarpon Springs. Here’s are the story lines I’ll be following: Can an African-American candidate win in Tarpon Springs? City Commissioner David Archie is facing off against my friend Matt King to replace Beverly Biliris as the next Mayor of the City of Sponges. And while there have been plenty of issues discussed on the…

Kathleen Ford, Scott Wagman – the two candidates who benefited most from local Democratic support – stiff Pinellas Dems, while Mike Fox mans up

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

During the 2009 St. Petersburg Mayoral Race, candidates Kathleen Ford and Scott Wagman benefitted greatly from the support of local Democrats. “As expected, Pinellas Democrats have thrown their support behind Kathleen Ford, the Democratic contender in the nonpartisan mayoral race.” – Bay Buzz, Pinellas Democrats throw support behind Kathleen Ford for St. Pete mayor “Local and state Democrats are aggressively targeting St. Petersburg’s officially nonpartisan mayor’s race to help put a Democrat, Kathleen Ford, in the mayor’s seat, while Republicans…

St. Petersburg’s elections have become a frustrating choice of black…or rainbow?

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

From reading the St. Petersburg Times‘ coverage of the municipal elections, one could be forgiven for thinking there is not a single white, straight voter in the entire city of St. Petersburg. Voters are either black or gay or they just don’t seem to matter, especially if they don’t have an opinion on where to build a new stadium. Since the primary, story after story has been written about Bill Foster and Kathleen Ford’s efforts to court the African-American vote.…

GOTV mailpieces from Scott Wagman, Bill Foster

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

If your mailbox is like mine, it’s probably stuffed like a Christmas turkey with mail from candidates looking to Get Out the Vote. Here are the GOTV pieces from Scott Wagman and Bill Foster: No way, Equality Florida and the Stonewall Democrats and Linda Lerner…who’d have thunk it? Nice airbrushing of that shiny dome, Wags. Like so much of his campaign, very earnest, but a little underwhelming, if not also graphically sloppy. Basically, these two mailpieces represent about $10,000 being…

Pinellas Stonewall Democrats re-issue press release endorsing Scott Wagman, only this time they blast Bill Foster

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

On the organization’s website, the Pinellas Stonewall Democrats have re-issued their press release endorsing Scott Wagman for Mayor of St. Petersburg. You’ll notice the Stonewalls continue to misleadingly frame this election as a battle against Foster. They are trying to drive turnout for Scott Wagman by making Foster out as the bogeyman. The Stonewalls don’t have to like Foster and Foster hasn’t been a friend to the gay community. But, by attacking Foster for Wagman, all the Stonewalls are really…

In the name of pride, why are the Stonewall Democrats asking these questions?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Let me begin this post by pre-empting some of the responses I am sure to receive because this article may seem like an attack on the Stonewall Democrats. As a matter of fact, my thinking is anything but negative about the Stonewall D’s, especially after a conversation I had with one of their prominent members, who said he’s gay first, and a Democrat second, because he’s been to too many estate sales in which the loved partner loses everything because…
