Alcohol prohibition repeal kick starter for “Whiskey and Wheaties” bill?

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The group Floridians for Fair Business Practices may be using the anniversary of the prohibition of alcohol as a kick starter to reinvigorate a stalled measure that would allow distilled alcohol sales in grocery stores. The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on Jan. 16, 1919, making alcohol a prohibited substance. That amendment was repealed at the end of 1933. The group is comparing the decades-old repeal to Florida’s alcohol separation law calling it outdated and one that…

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Procrastinators, rejoice. This year there are more apps and services than ever before to help last-minute shoppers. Apps such as Curbside deliver orders directly to the trunk of your car, more retailers are offering incentives to buy online and pick up in-store, and Amazon Prime Now and other same-day delivery services have vastly expanded this year. “In some sense, same-day delivery is going to become the new gift card,” said Daphne Carmeli, CEO of Deliv which works with retailers to…

Is the ‘whiskey and Wheaties’ bill on the rocks?

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Give state Rep. Carlos Trujillo credit for frankness. On Tuesday, he yanked his ‘whiskey and Wheaties’ bill from the agenda of the House Business and Professions subcommittee because, as he said, “one of my four votes is not here today” (though four votes is a minority on the 13-member committee). Trujillo, a Miami Republican, was referring to the panel’s Democratic ranking member, Kevin Rader of Delray Beach. The temporary postponement, of course, immediately started the buzz that the always contentious measure was on the rocks even before…

ABC’s app-based alcohol delivery service tears down its argument for keeping ‘whiskey & Wheaties’ wall

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If you listen to the lobbyists for ABC Fine Wine & Spirits and other independent liquor retailers, it would be the bacchanal end-of-the-world if the state’s Prohibition-era law that requires retailers to sell hard liquor in a separate store from groceries and other wares was repealed. For three years now, various lawmakers have carried legislation — nicknamed “whiskey and Wheaties” bills — pushed by Wal-Mart, Target and other big-box retailers that would ease regulations on the sale of alcohol. The bill for…

Halloween is brought you by these Florida lobbyists and political associations

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Even though classic costumes such as witches, vampires and Frankenstein’s monster may have gone out of style and been replaced by superheroes and Star Wars characters, the Halloween spirit is alive and well. The Florida Department of Health said this week that the average American will eat 3.4 pounds of candy this weekend, and many kids will eat more than 70,000 calories during their post trick-or-treating binge. It’ll take more than a couple loops around the block to work that off. There’s no such thing as Halloween…

Groups opposed to an effort to do away with retailers having separate stores to sell liquor have banded together as Florida Businesses Unite. The new alliance includes ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, the Florida Independent Spirits Association and Publix, according to a Wednesday news release. For three years now, various lawmakers have carried legislation – or “whiskey and Wheaties” bills – pushed by Wal-Mart, Target and other big-box retailers that would ease regulations on the sale of alcohol. State Rep. Carlos Trujillo, a Miami…

Grocery retailers aim to push “Whiskey and Wheaties” redux in 2016

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A legislative push to commingle whiskey and Wheaties will be back for a third time before Florida lawmakers next year. A coalition of national big-box stores and their allies will meet within the next two weeks to work on this year’s strategy, spokeswoman Christina Johnson said. Wal-Mart, Target and others formed Floridians for Fair Business Practices. They’ve wanted to repeal the Prohibition-era law that requires retailers to sell hard liquor in a store that is separate from groceries and other…
