Hillsborough PTC discusses Uber & Lyft regulations, but again fails to come to a resolution

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission held a two-and-a-half-hour public hearing on Wednesday on proposed regulations that would put ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft into compliance with the agency’s rules. But at the end of the morning, they opted to punt on the issue once again, mandating that a subcommittee come back with recommendations next month. Ever since Uber and Lyft began providing service in Hillsborough more than a year ago, they’ve become enormously popular, offering an alternative to the taxi cabs that…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.8.15 –The MOSI-USF Football stadium dilemma

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Hillsborough County Commissioners (and Administrator Mike Merrill) are gung ho on having the folks who run the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) explore an opportunity to move their facility into downtown Tampa, where it could be a part of Jeff Vinik’s grand plans to redevelop the Channelside area, even though there are serious questions about how productive such a move would be. in Top Headlines by

St. Petersburg GOP state Sen. Jeff Brandes has filed legislation that would allow share-riding companies Uber and Lyft to operate legally in Florida, and would also change the current composition of the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission — an agency that Brandes tried to kill in proposed legislation a year ago. The Brandes bill on the ride-sharing companies is similar to its companion in the House filed last week by Fort Walton Beach Republican Matt Gaetz in many respects. They both impose state…

Florida Senate poised to shift to the right

in Statewide by

From the Jacksonville Observer: The Florida Senate could be poised for a major power shift, with a bloc of moderate Republicans likely weakened by departures and intra-party rivalries. The changes are already underway, lawmakers and lobbyists say. Republican Sen. Joe Negron’s victory this week in a special election to replace outgoing Sen. Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie, is expected to tilt the seat slightly more to the right. And another special election this fall to replace the late Sen. Jim…
