Rays’ Chris Archer manages to avoid his 20th defeat

in Sports/Top Headlines by

No, Chris Archer didn’t have a good season. Just a good finish. Archer, the Rays’ pitcher, avoided his 20th loss of the year Thursday night in a 5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Archer would have been the first pitcher since 2003 (Detroit’s Mike Mayroth) to lose 20. Instead of becoming a trivia answer for years (who was the last pitcher to lose 20?), Archer instead will finish 9-19. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs. The…

USF shows off weapons in easy victory over Towson

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For USF, the challenge might be to figure out how to blend all of its talent. Which, as they say, isn’t a bad problem to have. The Bulls opened their 2015 season Saturday night with a 56-20 victory over Towson, even though none of stars seemed to have a huge night. Quarterback Quinton Flowers, for instance,  threw for only 178 yards. He did throw two touchdown passes and run for two more. Running back Marlon Mack had only 58 yards,…

Defense leads UCF to win in Scott Frost’s debut

in Sports/Top Headlines by

From the moment he signed on as Central Florida’s new football coach, the talk about Scott Frost has been his high-speed offense. That was okay in Saturday night’s debut. It was the defense that really shined, however. The Knights won their opener, 38-0, over South Carolina State. After last year’s 0-11 results, the win was welcome. The fact that the program looks to be headed in a good direction was even better. UCF held South Carolina State to only 138…

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Maybe the University of Florida signed the wrong Driskell. Maybe they should have waited for Jason Driskell instead. Driskell threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Florida Atlantic Owls to a 38-30 victory over Southern Illinois Saturday night. Driskell also ran for a two-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-two to give FAU a 28-24 lead. For SIU, Josh Straughan threw for 367 yards. Gregory Howell ran for 128 yards for FAU, averaging 8.2 yards per carry. The Owls…

Tampa Bay’s Jake Odorizzi tames Royals in Rays’ big 12-0 victory

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Maybe Jake Odorizzi will never give up another run. Certainly, Odorizzi is pitching that way for the Tampa Bay Rays. His last three straights – 20 2/3 innings – have been scoreless. He’s given up a total of 13 hits. Wednesday night, Odorizzi threw a two-hit shutout in six innings, and the Rays won a 12-0 game over a Kansas City team that had had its way with Tampa Bay this season. The Royals had won 12 of 13 games.…

Rays’ Jake Odorizzi keeps starting pitching streak going well

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It isn’t the hottest the Tampa Bay Rays have ever been. On the other hand, it’s decent. And this season, that’s as good as Tampa Bay has been. The Rays ran their second-half record to 6-7 on Friday night, winning the first game of a 10-game homestand. Tampa Bay won 5-1 over the New York Yankees with five of the team’s seven hits going for extra bases. Tampa Bay has won six of its last 11 after winning three of…
