Undecided voters in St. Pete are indicative of low voter turnout

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

With less than a month to go before Election Day, St. Pete residents are still largely undecided on who to elect to City Council. Even in the two races including incumbents some 40 percent of those polled haven’t decided who to vote for. In a St. Pete Polls survey of 591 registered St. Pete voters Monday, 40 percent weren’t sure whether to vote to re-elect Steve Kornell to District 5 or to bring in some fresh blood by casting a…

Amid campaign finance controversy, Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s lead shrinks to within the margin of error

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s lead in the polls has shrunk to just two points over opponent Will Newton, within the margin of error. She had a seven-point lead following the primary. The change is likely the result of a series of controversies showing Wheeler-Brown had used campaign funds to undergo dental work, a possible misuse of funds. Following that, SaintPetersblog uncovered the expense had gone misreported for more than six months as office space. That information led to…

Direct mail roundup: Lisa Wheeler-Brown mailer targets law enforcement and civilians

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In what was a busy day for campaign mailers, District 7 City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown added to mailboxes with a positive mailer Friday. One side shows the candidate walking hand-in-hand with two young boys down a sidewalk next to a park. The mailer touts “a safer St. Pete for our families.” The mailer than goes on to paraphrase Wheeler-Brown’s “tragic story” in which her son, Cabretti, was murdered in 2008. Following his death, Wheeler-Brown made it her mission to…

Another campaign mailer touting Will Newton for City Council District 7 hit mailboxes in St. Pete Friday. The addressed side of the mailer shows a smiling photo of Newton gazing out to the side with a park behind him touting the candidate as “the real deal!” Under his photo a resume of accomplishments is listed, including his service as district vice president for the local chapter of the Florida Professional Firefighters, 23-year firefighter and EMT veteran, 2011 Professional Firefighter of the…

Direct mail roundup: Will Newton flier uses St. Pete sewage dump as back-handed dig on his opponent

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The latest pro-Will Newton mailer doesn’t mention his opponent directly, but it definitely smacks of anti-Lisa Wheeler-Brown insinuations. Hitting voters’ mailboxes Thursday, the Newton mailer, paid for by his own campaign, plays on the recent St. Pete scandal in which millions of gallons of sewage were dumped into local bodies of water. “Raw sewage isn’t the only thing that stinks,” the mailer begins. “Lying to City Council about how much was dumped is even worse.” The mailer then goes on…

Karl Nurse inquiry prompts negative Will Newton report

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Councilmember Karl Nurse prompted a report questioning a City Council’s candidate’s ability to reach consensus if he serves on council. The Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign has been fighting hard to maintain its footing in the race to replace Wengay Newton. Her opponent is his brother, Will Newton. Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Will Newton had an unimpressive track record as a bargainer for the city’s firefighter union. Of the four bargaining impasses over 10 years,…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown backers tell her opponent to denounce Republican endorsements

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pinellas Stonewall Democrats are demanding City Council candidate Will Newton denounce endorsements from Republicans who have endorsed him. In a letter sent to Newton by the group, they ask that he “publicly separate himself from former St. Pete Mayor Rick Baker, councilmember-elect Ed Montanari and state Rep. Kathleen Peters. The demand is curious considering the LGBT rights advocacy group has already endorsed Newton’s opponent, Lisa Wheeler-Brown. It’s also odd considering the group has not expressed outrage over other similar…
