Tampa Bay Rowdies sign midfielder Walter Ramirez

in Sports by

The Tampa Bay Rowdies have added midfielder Walter Ramirez to a one-year contract, the club said Thursday. Per club and league policy, no further contract details were disclosed.

A wide midfielder, Ramirez joins the Rowdies after spending the past two seasons with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He brings to the team a depth of knowledge of the North American Soccer League.

Ramirez, 32, has played for the San Antonio Scorpions, Indy Eleven and the Strikers in his NASL career, spanning four seasons and 94 matches. He appeared in 27 of Fort Lauderdale’s 31 matches last season, tallying a career-high five goals.

“Walter is something of a dying breed in the world of football,” Rowdies Head Coach Stuart Campbell said in a statement. “He’s a naturally left-footed, left-sided player which can alter the way his team wants to play. That’ll be a big thing for us next season. So many teams nowadays play with a right-footed player on the left that drives inside, but Walter can give us that width we need.”

As signings continue to be finalized, the Rowdies’ midfield now boasts five members: Freddy Adu, Kalif Alhassan, Darwin Espinal, Ramirez and Keith Savage.
