All that USF wanted was a little help.
It didn’t get any at all.
Temple pulled away from Memphis late in a 31-12 win, hurting USF’s chances of pulling out the American Athletic East Division title. After beating Temple a week ago, Willie Taggart’s USF team remained one game behind the Owls. Their only chance of a victory now is if they beat winless UCF Friday night and UConn upsets Temple on Saturday.
Temple led Memphis only 14-12 going into the final period, but the Owls scored 17 points to pull away. Quarterback P.J. Walker threw for two touchdowns.
Highly touted Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch was held to 156 yards and four field goals in the loss.
