This is an ad for the GOP primary, which will be held June 1. Peterson informs viewers that they probably didn’t know Alabama’s Ag commissioner is responsible for $5 billion. “Bet you didn’t know that. You know why? Thugs and criminals. If they can keep you in the dark, they can do whatever they want with all that money.”
Of one of his opponents, Peterson says, “Who on earth would support such a dummy?” At that point, Peterson’s shotgun makes its first appearance.
This is being hailed as potentially the greatest political ad ever, in various corners of the Internet, from Hot Air to Time. It is wonderfully indulgent, and its directness has caught the national eye. This man Peterson is a straight shooter, probably in the literal sense.
There have been some other spectacular ads of the 2010 election cycle so far (not all of them to run on TV). Let’s take this moment to recap what Peterson’s ad is up against in 2010:
California Senate candidate and ex-HP CEO Carly Fiorina’s “Demon Sheep” YouTube video accusing her opponent of posing as a fiscal conservative
Also in Alabama, GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim James says, “This is Alabama. We speak English” in a TV ad
Bruce Barilla accuses Rep. Nick Rahall of supporting “gay sex” in a TV ad for his primary campaign
