USF coach Willie Taggert baffled by one of his player’s gunplay

in Sports/Top Headlines by

USF football coach Willie Taggart described himself as “baffled” by the discovery that one of his players, freshman tackle Benjamin Knox, has been arrested for firing a gun on campus.

The incident happened early Sunday morning, at 4 a.m., when cameras caught Knox firing a gun at a wall.

“I woke up (Sunday), thought I was going to come to work with a smile, excited, then you get slapped in the face with that news,” Taggart told The Tampa Tribune. “To hear what’s happened, it’s like ‘you’ve got to be kidding me.’”

Knox, a recruit from Deland, has been released from jail on $32,500 bond. He has been suspended from team activities.

“He’s a good kid, a good football player,” Taggert said. “It was even more surprising when I heard it was him. I was ticked off, and a lot of our plaeyrs were ticked off.”

The Bulls travel to UConn Saturday.

“It’s sad because you can make a bad decision and it ends the rest of your life,” Taggert said. “Our guys have to learn. We all know right from wrong.”
