Why Capitol folk need to keep an eye out for the Times’ Michael Van Sickler

Michael Van Sickler sure is a nice guy. Tall, oddly handsome, affable, MVS looks and sounds like a familiar friend rather than a beat reporter on deadline.

Do not be deceived: Van Sickler is all nails.

This is a lesson we here in the ‘burg learned when MVS covered the City Hall beat. Van Sickler would play his I’m-the-good-cop, my-editors-are-the-bad-cops routine to perfection and then — voila — he’d have someone’s a** in a sling in the next day’s newspaper.

Consider yourself warned, Capitol folk.

Van Sickler has already turned heads this legislative session with his “sweeping” profile of Speaker Will Weatherford last month, which included details of Weatherford’s apparently little-know arrest after a fight in Ybor City several years ago.

The Speaker’s office had a little fun today with Van Sickler and other Times/Herald reporters by placing fake appointments on Weatherford’s schedule.

Hardy-har-har.

Poke fun at Van Sickler all you want, but I’m telling you this guy’s not to be trifled with.
