For the next quarterback at FSU, there were always going to be comparisons.
The other guy had so many moments. The other guy won so many games. The other guy won a national title. The other guy won a Heisman. The other guy got in a bit of trouble, too.
And so, if you are De’Andre Johnson, quarterback in trouble, are you living in the shadows of Jameis Winston?
According to ESPN, Johnson was charged Tuesday with a misdemeanor battery, a charge that he certainly will have the ability to overcome. He’s not the first football player to be underage in a bar, and sadly, he’s not the first one to punch a female while there. No excuses, but it shouldn’t be a career-killer.
But will Johnson now inherit all of the reputation that Winston had while he was there?
A Bleacher Report headline already linked Johnson and FSU’s reputation as a school. Opposing fan groups are quick to connect the dots between the controversies of Winston and of Johnson. Things are probably going to be more strict on the next Seminole quarterback. There were a lot of good moments for Winston, too; those haven’t started yet for Johnson.
So far, he’s off to a bad start.
Let’s see where he goes.
