House Speaker Will Weatherford announced today his endorsement of Carlos Curbelo Florida’s 26th Congressional District. Weatherford broke the news via Twitter.
Curbelo is the favorite Republican to unseat incumbent Democratic Rep. Joe Garcia for the seat covering southwestern Miami-Dade County and all of Monroe County.
“I am happy to endorse Carlos Curbelo for Congress,” Weatherford said in a statement. “I look forward to supporting Carlos’ campaign this year as he articulates a bold vision for America.”

Curbelo responded to the announcement by saying Florida benefitted from Weatherford’s “special brand of leadership and integrity.”
Weatherford delivers “a clear vision, debating the issues honestly and openly, never fearing a great idea no matter the origin, and to always do the right thing for our state,” he added.
Carlos Curbelo faces four other Republicans in the august 26 GOP primary: former Miami U.S. Rep. David Rivera, who lost to Garcia in 2012; Cutler Bay Mayor Ed MacDougall; former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe Martinez; and attorney Lorenzo “Larry” Palomares-Starbuck.
According to the FEC website, Carlos Curbelo raised nearly $984,000 in fundraising as of the first quarter of 2014, with $792,530 cash on hand. In contrast, Garcia raised nearly $2.3 million through March 31, with $1.65 million on hand.
