At the moment, they were behind.
The crowd was loud, and the Miami Hurricanes could smell an upset, and the rankings were at risk. So FSU did what anyone would: It gave the ball to Dalvin Cook, who promptly swept around right end for a 23-yard touchdown.
It was Cook’s third score, and his shortest, but it was also his most important. One week after injuring his left hamstring, Cook rushed for 222 yards to beat the Hurricanes.
For his efforts, Cook is the Sunshine State Player of the Week. As if there was any doubt.
It was the second straight year that Cook, a Miami native, scored the go-ahead touchdown in a narrow win over Miami. Cook is averaging 158.4 yards rushing per game, and has 824 yards in his five games (although he missed almost the entire Wake Forest game). Not bad for a guy who missed most of training camp.
Other players considered for the award include Miami’s Brad Kaaya, who threw for 405 yards, USF’s Marlon Mack, who had 184 yards rushing against Syracuse, Florida’s Kelvin Taylor, who rushed for 99 yards and two scores and FIU’s Alex McGough, who threw for a career-high 270 yards.
