Pinellas commissioners turn to staff to evaluate ideas for BP money

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

After two surveys and a two-hour workshop spent listening to ideas on spending $7.1 million in BP settlement money, Pinellas commissioners turned everything over to the county staff. Once staff members have evaluated the ideas, they’ll bring everything back to commissioners. But it won’t happen before July 19. That’s when commissioners are scheduled to get the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year and staff is tied up with those preparations. “At some point, we will have to start whittling…

On the Pinellas School Board campaign trail, one issue dominates

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

It’s probably not surprising, but if you’re running for re-election to the Pinellas County School Board, you can expect questions about the conditions of five schools in south and mid-county branded by the media as “failure factories.” That’s the case even if you’re running for seat voted on only by residents in northernmost Pinellas County, Ken Peluso said. “You cannot deny the attitude of the general public and the way they see the schools,” Peluso said. “There are a lot…

The judge also handed Mike Mikurak a club he could use in his race against Charlie Justice for the District 3 at-large seat on the commission. Justice, like all the other commissioners, had voted to refuse the zoning and land-use change that sparked the lawsuit and…

The owner of a Clearwater engineering firm has been chosen to replace Pat Shontz on the Madeira Beach City Commission. Housh Ghovaee, a Madeira Beach resident, has been selected by commission members over two other candidates for the position. Ghovaee will serve out her term, which ends in March. “I’m extremely excited, extremely honored,” Ghovaee said. “I feel I can make a difference. If I didn’t feel…

Chris Latvala praises Pinellas School Board candidate Bill Dudley

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

State Rep. Chris Latvala took a few moments out of his re-election campaign Thursday to praise a Pinellas County School Board candidate.
