Today on Context Florida: musings on presidential power, coalition politics, and more

in Uncategorized by

Today on Context Florida, Bob Sparks writes a biting column, discussing a lawsuit by a Boca doctor that challenges whether the president or executive branch may selectively waive parts of Obamacare without Congressional approval. Then, Martin Dyckman proposes a clever scenario under which Speaker John Boehner could shrug off the “80 House crazies” who put him on the spot and build a cross-party coalition to “save our Constitution in the present crisis.” Next up, Ben Kirby talks about PACE —…

Today on Context Florida: 4 hits at Republicans; 3 on health care; 2 on shutdowns; and 1 on prepaid dental

in Uncategorized by

Today on Context Florida, Martin Dyckman talks the issue of the day: shutdown. Dyckman blames the “radical minority” of Republicans for leveraging “control of one part of one branch of the government to paralyze the whole of it.”  Darryl Paulson also takes a hard look at Republicans in the second of his two-part series on partisans in Florida; and Daniel Tilson, the same, suggesting that “government shutdown shenanigans” aren’t really about blocking Obamacare, but instead about “conservative Republicans pandering for…

New study provides strong case for keeping children’s Medicaid dental services separate

A new study, reported by the Wall Street Journal and conducted by UnitedHealthcare, suggests that regular dental care improves outcomes and reduces costs for persons with chronic conditions. Specifically, the study found that people with chronic conditions who received appropriate dental care had net medical and dental claims that were over $1,000 lower per year than for those who did not receive such care, even after accounting for the cost of the dental care itself.  Consider that people with chronic conditions account for more…

Florida State: ranked No. 1 in NCAA women’s soccer, No. 8 in NCAA football, and … No. 5 on Playboy’s list of the nation’s top 10 party schools? Indeed.   Rankings were generated by Playboy staff using Census data, National Center for Education Statistics, and feedback from social media. Last year’s winner, the University of Virginia, didn’t make the list; nor did the University of Florida that previously ranked at No. 4. Florida State was listed as a party school…

To the Florida Medical Association and the physicians they represent, this created an unfair playing field that placed defendants at a strong disadvantage, and prevented defense attorneys from deciding more quickly whether to proceed with or settle a case. In 2013, Sen.…

Today on Context Florida: Pipelines, jobs, a memorial, and a strong admonition

in Uncategorized by

Today on Context Florida, Florence Snyder memorializes Dexter Douglass, Florida’s “high-priced gladiator”, “wise counselor and community problem-solver.”   It is a must read for those who knew him, and especially for those who did not. Then, Dave Mica urged approval of the Keystone KL pipeline, which he argues will generate significant revenues and jobs, and would replace oil transport on ships with shipment across “the safest pipeline ever designed”. Barney Bishop commends Gov. Rick Scott for delivering on his promise to…
