Republicans denied an attempt to book event inside same hotel as Charlie Crist’s party

in Uncategorized by

Efforts by Florida Republicans to possibly interfere with the election night festivities of Charlie Crist’s campaign have been thwarted, confirms hotel staff at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66. Earlier today, Anthony Man of the Sun-Sentinel reported that Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera and local supporters of Governor Rick Scott will demonstrate outside the hotel where Crist is expected to a accept his party’s nomination in the governor’s race. My final predictions in today’s battleground legislative primaries

in Uncategorized by

Yesterday, we wrote about how twelve of Florida’s top political consultants were competing against Contribution Link’s forecasting model to determine a) if they could beat the machine and b) who was smartest among them. I won’t pretend to be as smart as the likes of Pat Bainter or David Johnson or Steve Vancore, but I do enjoy making predictions, so here are my final predictions in today’s battleground primaries. In House District 5, there is no doubt Brad Drake will…

In HD 67, it’s possible Chris Latvala will not face the opponent he was expected to

in Uncategorized by

There’s little doubt that Chris Latvala will win the GOP primary in House District 67, a Pinellas County-based seat which has been represented for the last eight years by Rep. Ed Hooper. After candidate qualifying, it appeared that Shawna Vercher would emerge from a three-way Democratic primary…

It is Primary Election Day in Florida and voter turnout will barely crest above twenty percent. Is there hope for better turnout in November? A new report from Gallup says ‘Yes.’ In the last five midterm elections, voter turnout has exceeded 40% when Congress’ approval rating was low, but turnout was below 40% when Americans were more approving, writes Jeffrey Jones.  Congressional job approval, currently 13%, is on pace to be the lowest it has been in a midterm election year.…

Direct mail round-up: Expressway authority scandal focus of anti-Mo Pearson mailer in HD 47

in Uncategorized by

Florida Trend’s Jason Garcia notes on Twitter today that the scandal which engulfed the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority is the focus of a direct mailpiece targeting HD 47 hopeful Mo Pearson, who is running against Mike Miller. Pearson is a capable candidate and probably has a bright future in politics, but I don’t think he will get past both Miller and Democrat Linda Stewart, so this mailer almost feels like overkill. Still, it’s interesting to see the OOCEA scandal…

Obamacare focus of new NRCC attack ad against Gwen Graham

in Uncategorized by

Gwen Graham and her support of the Affordable Care Act are the focus of a new National Republican Congressional Committee TV ad hitting the airwaves today in North Florida’s Second Congressional District. Obamacare remains a key campaign issue in the 2014 midterms, despite a few GOP candidates learning that as a tactic, opposition to the ACA might be losing some if its political punch. This is the first election cycle since full implementation of the law. NRCC’s 30-second ad, called…
