He is not one of the big boys. He does not play in one of the big stadiums.
But the size of his team’s victory was big enough that Florida International’s Alex McGough is the season’s first Sunshine State Player of the Week.
McGough hit 29 of 38 for 260 yards to lead FIU to a 15-14 victory over Central Florida to win the honor. With his team trailing by 11 at the half, he led them to touchdowns on two of their first three possessions. McGough made the all-freshman team in Conference USA with 11 starts last year.
Also considered were FSU’s Everett Golson, who threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns, South Florida’s Quinton Flowers, who hit 12 of 16 for 141 yards, and FAU’s Jacquez Johnson, who threw for 263 yards and ran for 97 in a loss to Tulsa.
