He’s in his second season, but University of Florida players are still proving themselves to head coach Jim McElwain.
McElwain, speaking on SEC Media Days, said that neither receiver Antonio Callaway or Treon Harris have been permitted to rejoin the Gators just yet. McElwain said the two are enrolled in school and are working out, but nothing has been resolved beyond that.
“There’s not really a timetable on that,” McElwain said.
McElwain admitted he was disappointed as the Gators lost their final three games. He said, in particular, the Gators have to get better on the offensive line. Florida gave up 45 sacks in 14 games a year ago.
The Gators are still wondering who their quarterback will be, either transfer Luke Del Rio or Austin Appleby or freshmen Feleipe Franks or Kyle Trask.
“I think the key is having that right mix,” McElwain said. “Obviously, Appleby is someone who has played in big games. He’s played in big stadiums having started in the Big 10. That’s something that’s invaluable. In Luke’s case, the familiarity he had with what we do is invaluable.”
