Florida’s political landscape shuffles once again as U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller considers a run for Marco Rubio’s Senate seat.

Now, there is also a healthy dose of déjà vu.

Republican State Sen. Greg Evers, who ran to replace Miller in 2001 after he left Tallahassee for Congress, told reporters he is looking again to replace Miller, this time in Florida’s 1st Congressional District.

“I would like to follow in his footsteps,” Evers, a two-term GOP senator from Baker, told reporter Tom McLaughlin of the NWF Daily News.

Miller currently chairs the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. Rubio would be vacating his Senate seat as he seeks the presidency.

“Right now, I’m meeting with voters and listening to what things are important to them to see if I would be a candidate they can get behind,” Miller said in an email to

Regardless of what Miller ultimately decides, Evers will support him.

“I feel like the people of this district deserve continuing good representation in Washington,” Evers said, adding that if he chose to run, he could give constituents real conservative representation.

As a farmer, Evers has always performed well in northern Okaloosa, Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, the strongly agricultural areas that are part of Miller’s CD 1. Evers’ Senate District 2 is comprises of much of the same geography: Escambia, Santa Rosa Counties and the northern part of Okaloosa.
