Red Wings hand Tampa Bay Lightning first defeat of new season

in Sports/Top Headlines by

As it turns, the Tampa Bay Lightning will not go undefeated in the 2015-16 season, after all.

The Lightning, playing its third game in four days, lost their first game of the season on Tuesday night to Detroit, 3-1.

It was the first time the teams had played since the Lightning eliminated the Red Wings in seven games in last year’s playoffs. The energy from an early-season competition didn’t match the vigor of the post-season, but for Detroit, it was something, at least. Gustav Nyquist, Henrik Zetterberg and Kyle Quincy scored for the Wings.

Ryan Callahan scored Tampa Bay’s only goal midway through the second period. Goaltender Ben Bishop was denied in his attempt to become Tampa Bay’s all-time winningest goaltender.

The Lightning returns home Thursday night to play the Dallas Stars.
