Epilogue to the St. Pete Mayoral Race: IRS filings show Deveron Gibbons’ campaign was likely behind attacks against Bill Foster

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

When a direct-mail piece attacking him landed in voters’ mailboxes, Bill Foster knew which of his opponents was behind the dirty tricks…fellow Republican Deveron Gibbons: Foster said he thinks fellow candidate Deveron Gibbons is behind the mailer. As reported by Aaron Sharockman: In 2006, Bainter attacked an attorney general candidate, state Sen. Walter “Skip” Campbell, for a bill he sponsored that regulated the payday loan industry. Foster noted that Gibbons works for Amscot Financial, a company that provides payday loans.…

Larry Williams’ final TV spot

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

So much for the rule of not ending on a negative… Larry Williams’ TV commercials have been relatively well-produced. Relatively being the operative word. The ads are a little shaky, they zoom in and out quickly, the on-screen text is sloppy, but overall, these spots are more effective than the spots Adam Goodman produced for Deveron Gibbons’ campaign, but they are not as powerful as Bill Foster’s commercial. And Pam Williams looks a lot better in person than she did…

Former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young to work on GOTV for Gibbons…and other thoughts on Deveron’s campaign

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Rumors are flying around so quickly, there isn’t enough time for separate posts on all the news coming out of the St. Petersburg Mayoral Race. A few tidbits from the Deveron Gibbons’ campaign: Word is that former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young will be rallying black voters for Gibbons during several GOTV stops at African American churches next Sunday. 10 things I think I think about the televised ‘Conversation with the Candidates’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. The St. Petersburg Times should be embarrassed by the turnout at last night’s forum. There wasn’t more than 150 people in the audience, none of whom haven’t already made up their mind. The entire balcony was empty! That’s how bad the Times’ “picayune” coverage has been…that no one, and I mean no one, cares enough to show up for the only televised debate of the campaign. Where was the Police Chief or members of his command? Where were the…

10 things I think I think about the latest campaign fundraising reports

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. I was one of the first to call for the City Clerk to post the Campaign Treasurer reports online, and while I appreciate the initial effort to post PDFs of the reports, the city needs to take the next step and create an accessible online database to see who’s giving what. Political Whore Wayne Garcia echoes this call in his cover story on how to fix Tampa Bay politics: “While we’re at it, how about better, more user-friendly interfaces…

The Worst Election Ever

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Who would believe the fate of St. Petersburg could be changed by a car accident that occurred well beyond its city limits? On a brisk October evening, the Lord decided to call home Patrick Brett, the 20-year-old son of Terry and Kim. The high school student body president, homecoming king, and president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, died well before his time in a car accident on his way home from a college football game. Because it was near…

National Journal: Charlie Crist Holds the Cards

in Statewide by

Name recognition is a must for a statewide candidate in Florida. But in such a large state, that’s expensive. With the faltering economy squeezing would-be primary contenders for the 2010 Senate race, the focus for the next 18 months is likely to stay on Gov. Charlie Crist (R) and Rep. Kendrick Meek (D). For now, advantage Crist. There is no incumbent in the scramble to replace retiring Sen. Mel Martinez (R), but Crist might as well be: The popular governor…
