Proposal for long-term deal between St. Pete, Rowdies likely to go before voters

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rowdies are ready for the big leagues, and it appears their shot will be coming sooner than later. Major League Soccer announced last month that the Rowdies and St. Petersburg will be one of 10 cities under consideration for an expansion team. Before that happens — representing a considerable boost for both the team and St. Petersburg — the Rowdies will need to show, among other things, a comprehensive stadium plan that ensures the club will provide…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Bill Edwards’ effort to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to St. Petersburg may have received a major boost from MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Last week, the Miami Herald reported that Garber put a time limit on the prospective MLS stadium in Miami set up by superstar soccer player David Beckham. “There is a deadline on the Miami deal,” Garber told reporters in Toronto. The time is right: Embrace Bill Edwards’ bold vision for Rowdies, Al Lang Stadium

Al Lang Stadium expansion wouldn’t rob Rays stadium money

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A proposed expansion of Al Lang Stadium on the downtown St. Pete waterfront would require bed tax funds from the county. So would a new baseball stadium if the Rays decide to stay in St. Pete. But contrary to buzz following reports Tuesday on the proposal, one project would not rob funds from the other. According to Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch, the two projects would receive funding from different pots within the county’s bed tax revenue. “We ‘reserve’ approximately…
