A survey conducted last week by St. Pete Polls shows Pat Frank leading challenger Kevin Beckner by a substantial margin heading into their Democratic primary race for the Hillsborough County Clerk of the Circuit Courts race. Frank gets 49 percent in the survey to Beckner’s 29 percent. Another 23 percent say they are unsure who to support. 10 things I think I think about why Deveron Gibbons and Scott Wagman lost

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. Both Gibbons and Wagman hired campaign managers who have yet to prove themselves in a significant, competitive race. Gibbons hired Nick Hansen, who’s resume includes efforts for Angelo Cappelli and Mitt Romney, while Toni Molinaro quarterbacked the Pinellas County Democrat’s failed Vote Local campaign. Molinaro also lost her race to retain her precinct in PCDEC. Neither manager’s work history was exactly confidence inspiring. Hansen and Molinaro’s efforts in the Mayoral Campaign weren’t their finest hours, either. Hansen was nowhere…

Charlie Crist should cancel fundraiser on 9/11

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

If appearances matter, an upcoming fundraiser for Gov. Charlie Crist will generate some buzz. Not only is the fundraiser being held on the 8th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, but the host gave more than $30,000 to Barack Obama. An invitation lists the fundraiser at retired entrepreneur Fazal A. Fazlin’s waterfront mansion in St. Petersburg. The entrance fee is $1,000 or $2,400 for a VIP meet and greet and photo with the GOP U.S. Senate candidate. FEC records…

10 things I think I think about the televised ‘Conversation with the Candidates’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. The St. Petersburg Times should be embarrassed by the turnout at last night’s forum. There wasn’t more than 150 people in the audience, none of whom haven’t already made up their mind. The entire balcony was empty! That’s how bad the Times’ “picayune” coverage has been…that no one, and I mean no one, cares enough to show up for the only televised debate of the campaign. Where was the Police Chief or members of his command? Where were the…

Monday’s Mayor’s Race Update: The Consultant Primary

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Before the first campaign donation is even made, the candidates for Mayor of St. Petersburg are engaged in a primary in which there are no votes, although there are certainly winners and losers. I’m talking about the competition to secure the few high-profile political consultants working in the Bay area. The Times reports that three campaigns have hired managers/consultants to run their campaigns. If the newspaper is the judge of this race, then Scott Wagman has “won” the consultant primary,…
