Monday’s Mayoral Wrap-Up

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Today is the six-months-and-counting point before the September primary and to mark the occasion, Bill Foster will unveil his “Foster Formula,” although I have a few ideas about what that really means. Even though I think Foster is getting into the race a month later than he should, he is a formidable candidate. He represents a point-of-view, i.e., the religious right, that has no one else to support. Strange then that Foster decided to skip the Pinellas County REC’s Lincoln…

Bill Foster to launch campaign at Pioneer Park

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Mayoral hopeful Bill Foster will unveil his “Foster Formula” at noon on Monday during a public speech at Pioneer Park (and after homeless protesters interrupted Kathleen Ford’s announcement speech, who knows who will show up at Foster’s speech). Monday marks the six-months-and-counting mark until the primary for the Saint Petersburg Mayor’s race. Actually, voting will begin as early as July, but his late entry doesn’t seem to worry Foster: “Unlike other campaigns, I don’t have to cram for the final,”…

Monday Mayoral Wrap-up

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

That loud swooshing sound you hear is all of the oxygen being taken in this week before late-entry candidates Bill Foster and Kathleen Ford elbow their way into the mayoral conversation. In my analysis, there’s only room for one of these two candidates in the general election, although that doesn’t mean they should fight amongst themselves. In fact, I think that’s the last thing you’ll see out of these two. In their sights has to be quasi-establishment candidates Jamie Bennett and…

Bill Foster’s Formula?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Bill Foster said he will hold a public event March 2 to unveil his campaign slogan, Web site and platform, which he is calling the Foster Formula. It doesn’t take a beautiful mind to think up some of those formulas.

Scott Wagman: No New Parks

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Scott Wagman, aka The Half Million Dollar Man for his ridiculous fundraising boast, is running into the challenges many first-time candidates face at one point or another. Before I get into that, let me begin by saying that Wagman is trying hard and he has some smart people working for him. He just uploaded a sharp, welcoming campaign website that features a lot of social networking and video. He also just had an open house for his new campaign headquarters (it…

Mayoral Madness

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

After yesterday, with both Rick Kriseman and Ken Welch nobly deciding not to run for Mayor of St. Petersburg, political observers we are left with a much clearer “playoff picture.” The race is still in the first round, but the paths to victory for some candidates are now much more defined. As I saw it, only either Deveron Gibbons or Ken Welch could move forward by consolidating the African-American vote. With Welch’s departure, Gibbons wins an entire voting block, if only…

Is Deveron Gibbons polling already?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The sister of a close friend says she received a call this week from Republican polling firm The Tarrance Group asking questions about the St. Petersburg mayor’s race. The woman who answered this poll was struck by how detailed and extensive the interview was; based on the questions she said they asked, I’d estimate the poll cost at least 10K. Most of the questions were framed around Deveron Gibbons, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the poll is being conducted by…
