5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times (6/28)

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I’m not the only blog-reporter upset with the St. Petersburg Times and the way it interacts with the online community.  Last week, I shared a drink at St. Pete Brasserie with Elizabeth Dougherty of Eat St. Pete and Brian Bailey of I Love the ‘burg.  Both talked about something I have complained about for over a year: The Times‘ blatant thievery of scoops and stories that begin in the blogosphere. Dougherty specifically mentioned how the Times’ food writers made no…

I wish I had a nickel for every time Jamie Bennett says I stood on the steps of City Hall and (fill in the blank)

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I’ve certainly done enough damage to Jamie Bennett’s campaign that I should probably never say another thing about him. Naaahhh. Bennett’s just too easy a target. And with Alex Haak out of the mayoral race, I predict Jamie Bennett will pick up the slack in the guffaw department. My latest gripe about Bennett comes from listening to him at the most recent mayoral forums. It seems like he begins every statement with: “I stood on the steps of City Hall…

Dave Matthews Band Jam to Billboard #1

in Apolitical by

The Dave Matthews Band lead the charge in a week of change at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The venerable jam band’s Big Whiskey & the Groogrux King (the title is an homage to late sax player LeRoi Moore, who died in an ATV accident last year) will notch the second-biggest rock bow of the year so far, with first week sales of 424,000, according to figures supplied by Nielsen SoundScan.

Larry Williams finally takes down billboard!

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

What a successful day it’s been! I cold turkeyed the Bay Buzz, the city published the campaign finance reports online and, driving home, I noticed that Larry Williams finally took down that horrible billboard he has had up since his 2001 campaign.

Larry Williams picks up paperwork to run

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

It’s been eight years since he was last seen in public, but Larry Williams looks like he is going forward on his threat to run for mayor of St. Petersburg. The City Clerk’s office reports Rip Van Williams woke up and picked up the official paperwork last week. Look for a Williams’ filing the first week of April right after a new fundraising quarter begins. And right after he files, look for my complaint against Williams’ campaign for not taking…

Larry Williams, tear down that billboard!

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Walking in the Bahama Shores neighborhood today, I passed by Larry Williams home. The former council member is pondering a run for mayor, despite his poor finish in 2001. However, before he thinks about a run in 2009, shouldn’t he take down his billboard from eight years ago? On 22nd Avenue North, near 28th Street, the billboard is a private sign not maintained by any of the major outdoor advertising concerns such as ClearChannel. So I could understand if the…
