FSU needs to avert disaster in its opener against Ole Miss

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For Florida State, the important thing is that it should not, for a moment, be Oklahoma. Or LSU. Or Notre Dame. Or Southern Cal. Or any of the other first-week disappointments around the country. When the Seminoles open their season tonight, that’s the main thing. Avoid disaster. Stay out of the way of trouble. Ole Miss, the opponent of the Seminoles, is a dangerous team with quarterback Chad Kelly. Don’t lose. FSU is favored in tonight’s game because it is…

The running backs: Can FSU star Dalvin Cook win the Heisman Trophy?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Soon, the chase begins. Soon, Davin Cook sets his eyes on the Heisman Trophy. What’s that? Oh, you don’t think Cook has a shot? After all, of the six players who finished ahead of Cook in last year’s Heisman race, four of them are back. In the odds of winning the Heisman, Cook is fifth. Doesn’t that put him in the chase position from the start? Well, not really. If the Heisman voting recently shows us anything, it’s that it…

FSU’s Jimbo Fisher figures the ACC has three Heisman candidates

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It isn’t just the title that will be on the line this season in the ACC. It could also be the Heisman Trophy. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher casually mentioned that three players from the ACC could be ranked as Heisman Trophy contenders: the Seminoles’ Dalvin Cook, Clemson’s DeShaun Watson and Miami’s Brad Kaaya. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. Last year Watson was third in the voting and Cook was seventh. Only Kaaya did not finish in the top 10. “You’ve got…

FSU overwhelmed as Houston stops Dalvin Cook cold

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The University of Houston overwhelmed Florida State in Atlanta Thursday afternoon, winning the Peach Bowl going away. The Cougars, clearly more fired up about playing in the Peach than FSU, won 38-24 for their 13th win of the year (13-1). Houston took a 21-3 first-half lead, then held off the Seminoles for the win. FSU, which won a national title two years ago and reached the playoffs last year, was never able to figure out the Houston defense. Houston’s rushing…

Houston’s strong run defense awaits Dalvin Cook in Peach

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The FSU Seminoles’ offense will not limp into today’s Peach Bowl. That offense, for the most part, resides in the legs of Dalvin Cook, who has finally had time to rest that nagging hamstring, which is a good thing for the Seminoles. It is the key matchup of the game, Cook’s legs against the Houston rushing defense. Cook was sixth in the country this year with 1,658 yards, which clearly makes him the biggest running threat the Cougars have faced.…

Year in Review: FSU Seminoes don’t meet their high standards in 2015

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For most schools, it would have been a terrific season. A 10-2 record. A star running back. A great defense. But for FSU, the 2015 season will be one of disappointment. After winning a national title and reaching the college football playoffs in the two previous seasons, the Florida State Seminoles showed a bit of slippage this year. Part of the reason is that transfer quarterback Everett Golson didn’t match the hype, and eventually, he was replaced by Sean McGuire.…

Heisman finalists do not include FSU runner Dalvin Cook

in Sports/Top Headlines by

As good as FSU’s Dalvin Cook was this year, he is not among the three players listed as Heisman Trophy candidates. Nor is LSU’s Leonard Fournette. Nor Navy’s Keenan Reynolds. In one of the most competitive Heisman races ever, the finalists are Clemson’s DeShaun Watson, Stanford’s Christian McCafferty and Alabama’s Derrick Henry. Five straight quarterbacks have won the award, which would lean toward Watson, whose team is unbeaten. Henry’s team has one loss. McCafferty’s team is the only one that…
