Florida lawmakers say they ‘stand with Texas’ in wake of Dallas shootings

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida lawmakers are standing with Texas, saying they join the country in mourning the law enforcement officers killed in a deadly attack in Dallas. “The violence displayed against Dallas law enforcement was a senseless and cowardly act that has no place in our country. Law enforcement officers across the nation bravely put their lives on the line every day in order to protect our homes, our communities, and our families,” said Gov. Rick Scott in a statement Friday morning. “We…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Even before they began operating in Tampa, a coterie of Tampa Bay area Republicans have championed ridesharing companies Uber and Lyft. Those state Representatives include Jeff Brandes, Jamie Grant and Dana Young. In a fundraising pitch sent to supporters in her bid for the state Senate District 18 seat this fall, Young boasts about the work that Republicans have done in Tallahassee in recent years, saying that the state leads the country in job growth and that unemployment is at an eight-year low. “But there’s…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.24.16 – CNN’s questionable move

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I was driving to a dental appointment yesterday when I heard via Sirius/XM’s POTUS channel that CNN had hired former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as a “contributor” to their network’s political team. The motivation for hiring such a prominent surrogate, obviously, is to get somebody on set who can get into the candidate’s head, if you will. So perhaps Lewandowski can provide some insight in their political coverage. Probably not. Upon leaving the campaign this week (or being unceremoniously dumped, to…

Adult club impresario and progressive activist Joe Redner is once again running for office, this time in the Senate District 18 race that features Republican Dana Young and Democrat Bob Buesing battling it out. The iconoclastic Redner, who has been unsuccessful running for local and state offices for years, has previously run as a Democrat but in recent elections has filed as an independent. He calls Young a “typical, no caring Republican,” and says that while he thinks Buesing is a nice man, he believes the…

Speaking with FloridaPolitics.com last week, Democratic Senate District 18 candidate Bob Buesing said that he was maintaining an open mind regarding the Tampa Bay Express project, but said he wanted the Florida Department of Transportation to show more flexibility in working with the local neighborhoods in Tampa that will be directly affected by its implementation. The controversial $3.3 billion toll lanes road project is up for a crucial vote before the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Organization next week. While the business community is…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.13.16 — What happens now?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

So, what now? America suffered through yet another gun shooting massacre over the weekend in Orlando, and by now you know all the relevant details. The question is: as a society, do we just stay sad and then move on stoically? “This massacre is, therefore, a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school or in a house of worship, or in a movie…
