Here’s where sh*t stands — the ‘Democrats can’t keep it together’ edition

in Peter/Top Headlines by

For an entire eight days — EIGHT DAYS — local Democrats had their sh*t together. On April 25, state Rep. Dwight Dudley announces he will not seek re-election. Hours later, the well-liked Ben Diamond announces his candidacy for Dudley’s seat along with the endorsements of almost all of Pinellas’ Democratic elected officials. The seamless transition was almost Republican in its efficiency. Then, on May 3, Eric Lynn, heretofore a candidate for the 13th Congressional District, announces that he is dropping…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa Republican Dana Young raised more $53,350 in April, in her first full month of fundraising since declaring for the new Senate District 18 seat in January. Because lawmakers can’t fundraise while in session, Young only seriously began fundraising last month (there was one sole contribution in March). She was able to move the war chest over from her House campaign account, however, including a $110,000 haul back in December. Young has represented District 60 in Hillsborough County since 2010, and announced…

Tampa House Republicans not bullish on Rick Scott getting his way on incentives in 2017

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

During the past Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature denied one of Gov. Rick Scott’s signature issues — a $250 economic incentives funding plan to encourage businesses to locate or expand in Florida. It was not only a blow to the governor’s ego (and list of priorities), but also disappointed those in the economic development camp, such as many of the folks who attended Tuesday’s Tampa Bay legislative delegation luncheon sponsored by the Tampa Bay Partnership. Those same business officials couldn’t have…

Ed Narain gets no love for advocating that Florida cities should be able to hold their own tax referendums

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A couple of years after Hillsborough County voters overwhelmingly rejected a sales tax referendum on transportation, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn talked about getting Tallahassee lawmakers to back a measure that would allow big cities like Tampa the ability to place their own tax referendums on the ballot. It received little support from the local delegation, and was never even proposed as a bill. Flash forward to Tuesday’s luncheon hosted by the Tampa Bay Partnership, where state Representative Ed Narain expressed a similar desire,…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.3.16 – Only six more months of hearing about Hillary vs.The Donald – every day

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well today’s the Indiana primary, and aren’t you all excited about that? I didn’t think so. A CNN/ORC poll released  yesterday shows that more than eight of ten Americans believe Hillary Clinton will challenge Donald Trump for president in November. That was taken before Indiana votes today, or Nebraska next week, or California and New Jersey next month. But it’s still more fun to talk about a contested convention than start talking everyday about a Hillary vs. Donald confrontation, since that’s still…
