Jeff Brandes say his next focus will be on reforming Florida prison system

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A mentally ill inmate who was in protective custody was found dead at the Columbia Correctional Institution on Tuesday, a day after a corrections officer was hospitalized in an attack. It’s yet another black mark on a prison system that many say is overcrowded and underfunded, though Department of Corrections insist those issued had nothing to do with the attack. The Florida Legislature opted not to give the Department of Corrections the 734 additional positions that the agency said were necessary to…

Victor Crist unveils idea to “privatize” Hillsborough PTC rules on Uber and Lyft

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

(Updated) Can the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission finally find common cause with Uber and Lyft in 2016? That possibility isn’t necessarily any clearer today, but PTC Chairman Victor Crist is extremely optimistic after he unveiled his proposed new regulations on Thursday. He hopes they’ll end the war between his agency and the two ridesharing companies, which have operated illegally in Hillsborough County for nearly two years. “The big difference here is a huge policy shift, where we are privatizing…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.30.16 – What happened to the moderate, affable Pat McCrory?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Back in 2009-2010, the folks behind the Moving Hillsborough Forward brought Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory to Tampa on three different occasions to advise local officials on how to pass the one-cent sales tax referendum for transit on the November 2010 ballot in Hillsborough County. As we all remember, the measure went down to a resounding defeat, but McCrory came off to most of the local media as well. Several of Tampa Bay’s most prominent fine arts institutions found success in the Legislature’s budget for 2016-17, navigating the delicate appropriations process and escaping Gov. Rick Scott‘s veto pen. Lawmakers approved $2 million for Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, frequently home to performances by The Florida Orchestra and national touring acts. Katie Pedretty, Director of Public Relations, said the money will go toward renovating the 33-year-old building that has become as much a public space as a private entity. “The lobby will be expanded by more than 6,000 square feet to include…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For decades, aspiring restaurateurs in Tampa and Hillsborough County have had to contend with regulations unlike those in any other part of Florida. State law requires that any restaurant that serves alcohol must be at least 2,500 square feet in size. However, in Hillsborough County,  state law dictated that restaurants that sell booze must be at least 4,000 square feet. Not any longer, after Governor Rick Scott signed a bill (HB 1417) sponsored by Tampa House Republican Dana Young on Friday that revises Hillsborough’s space requirements for liquor licenses for restaurants. “What was…

Dana Young, 51-year-old Tampa representative, just concluded her sixth session in Tallahassee, and hopes to return next year with a promotion into the state Senate. With redistricting creating a brand-new state Senate seat that resembles her Hillsborough County House District 60 seat, the House Majority Leader has chosen to bypass re-election this fall and run in Senate District 18, becoming the first person from either party to do so. A self-described “hard-core conservative Republican,” Young was no shoo-in when running…
