Steve Kornell jabs at Angela Rouson in dueling mail-pieces to early voters

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The question “Who says…?” is at the center of the debate between Steve Kornell and Angela Rouson in their campaign to win the District 5 seat on the St. Petersburg City Council. Both candidates mailed direct mail-pieces (both of which are heads-and-shoulders better than the butt-wipe the Mayoral Candidates mailed out) to the so-called early voters and the differences between the two is obvious: Steve Kornell is a recreation leader, Angela Rouson is a leader, period. Kornell’s mail-piece is actually…

It’s not the party, it’s the after-party

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Campaign after-parties are for me what weddings are for most other people…the best place to get laid without having to pay. Here’s the rundown of where the candidates will be: Jamie Bennett is partying at home with his wonderful wife, who yesterday was classy enough to flick Barry Edwards the middle finger while waving signs. Classy, Aimee, classy. In one of the more interesting cases of downstairs-upstairs, Kathleen Ford will be celebrating at Red Mesa Cantina, while Deveron Gibbons goes…

Why did Democrat Janet Long go to Jack Latvala’s campaign kick-off?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Evidently, more than 250 people stopped by Jack Latvala’s campaign kick-off at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Certainly, many of those who attended did so out of fear, rather than enthusiasm for Jack’s campaign. Maybe that explains why Democrat Janet Long was one of those who went to wish Jack well in his effort to put a Democratic seat back in the GOP’s column. Janet has been as effective a state representative can be considering her party’s in the minority and her…

Charlie Justice backs Wags, Dem dominoes to fall?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Now that Charlie Justice has endorsed Scott Wagman, is the rest of the local Democratic Party ready to jump on “Wagon” (get it???). Ken Welch and Rick Kriseman have already agreed to endorse, but the Wagman campaign is reportedly holding back on announcing their endorsements, planning to roll out those endorsements in the coming weeks to project a sense of momentum. Meanwhile, Representative Janet Long, who has no close ties to Wagman or his campaign. is uninterested in endorsing.

Blog: Where are all the white, Christian candidates in the Democratic Party?

in Statewide by

As it stands right now, the front runners in the Republican races are all straight, non-Hispanic white, Christian men. Democrats meanwhile have no straight, white, Christian men. Both lack any Hispanic presence. So after the NRSC endorsed Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio in the Republican Senate primary, a lot of people implied it was a snub to Hispanics. We thought this was silly. Crist has won three statewide campaigns in a row, is an extremely popular governor, and has a national…

Ramsay McLauchlan at Tiger Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Long in the political wilderness, the 2008 presidential and congressional elections demonstrated a drastic return to power for the party of the left. But while Democrats bask in the glow of their successes in National elections, the party hasn’t been able to make much of a go of it in Florida and Pinellas County. Why hasn’t the local party been able to translate the national voting mood into success for state and local candidates? Can Pinellas County’s new Chairman of…

Give Carl Zimmermann credit

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Sure, Carl Zimmermann lost his race to neo-populist Peter Nehr by less than 1,500 votes, but Carl did so with determination and style — and in a district as egregiously gerrymandered as any in Florida. I served as a consultant to Carl’s campaign at the very beginning of his effort. Even then I could tell that Carl was a serious candidate who could have won had he run in a more competitive district. Unfortunately, the state and local Democratic party…
