Jason Driskell leads FAU to second-half victory over Salukis

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Maybe the University of Florida signed the wrong Driskell. Maybe they should have waited for Jason Driskell instead. Driskell threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Florida Atlantic Owls to a 38-30 victory over Southern Illinois Saturday night. Driskell also ran for a two-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-two to give FAU a 28-24 lead. For SIU, Josh Straughan threw for 367 yards. Gregory Howell ran for 128 yards for FAU, averaging 8.2 yards per carry. The Owls…

Jac VerSteeg: Rick Scott puts Band-Aid on environmental wounds

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A politician is a guy who shoots you in the gut and then campaigns by bragging about the Band-Aid he put on the wound. The latest example: Just days after The Palm Beach Post’s John Kennedy documented how Gov. Rick Scott‘s environmental policies had led to an explosion of huge developments in Palm Beach County and across the state, Scott showed up in the county to tout his environmental achievements. Scott came to Florida Atlantic University’s Pine Jog Environmental Education…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.7.16 — Florida academic fired for unpopular (and um, questionable) views?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

James Tracy was fired last month, though the Florida Atlantic University communications professor still can file a grievance to maintain his job. Although he would certainly dispute being labeled a conspiracy theorist, that’s essentially how I learned about him when I wrote a story about conspiracy theories in Creative Loafing. Tracy claimed the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was fake. He also suggested that the Boston Marathon bombing and San Bernardino shooting were bogus as well. It’s when he got into a public dispute with the…

FSU comes back in second half to beat upset-minded FAU

The FSU Seminoles spent most of the afternoon staring an upset in the face in the Orange Bowl Classic. In the end, they made it look the other way. But the Owls scored only 24 in the second half. It was 44-33 early in the second…

FAU finishes an unlucky season by beating Old Dominion

in Sports/Top Headlines by

This time, the Florida Atlantic Owls kept victory from slipping away. Barely. After blowing a 24-3 first-half lead, the Owls came back to win 33-31 on two field goals by Greg Joseph, who kicked four for the day. For coach Charlie Partridge’s FAU, it has been a snake-bitten season. It lost in overtime to Tulsa. It was tied at 20 in the third period with Miami. It gave up three defensive touchdowns to Buffalo. It blew a 12-point lead to…

College Roundup: Gators have to go to overtime to beat FAU

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The quarterbacking wasn’t very good. The placekicking was worse. But the defense was pretty good, and for the University of Florida, that was enough. Barely. The Gators held on to beat Florida Atlantic, 20-14 in overtime, on an unsatisfying afternoon in Gainesville Saturday. Florida, which had its second straight poor afternoon offensively, won the game when Treon Harris found tight end Jake McGee for a touchdown in overtime. But it was a rare bright spot for Florida on Saturday, who…

College roundup: USF wins the biggest game of Taggart’s era

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Perhaps it wasn’t Willie Taggart’s signature victory. On the other hand, it will do until a better one comes along. Taggart, who was talking about being on the hot seat earlier as his team got off to a 1-3 start, now has a team that is bowl eligible. The USF Bulls upset Temple, the nation’s 22nd ranked team, with a complete effort Friday night. The Bulls won 44-23 behind the Three Amigos, there three headed attack of running back Marlon…
