Florida’s Democrats need a new theme

in Statewide by

Something that sticks in my craw every single time I visit their website is the theme used by the Florida Democratic Party: Putting Floridians First Because Security Begins at Home What an Orwellian jumble of idea-by-committee sloganeering. Thematic horseshit like “…Because Security Begins at Home” must have been a by-product of knee-jerk, post-9/11 thinking entirely irrelevant in the current political and economic environment. Sure, a website tagline may seem like small potatoes, but maybe it’s not. Maybe it says something…

Karen Thurman wants to know where Tim Pawlenty stands on Crist vs. Rubio

in Statewide by

As Minn. Gov. and Presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty travels to Orlando today to raise money for the Republican Governor’s Association, Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman called on Pawlenty to let Floridians know who he will support in the state’s primary. Pawlenty has refused to make an endorsement, even though his Political Action Committee’s mission is “helping candidates and translating our ideas into policies that everyone can relate to and support.” “It’s a simple question — will Tim Pawlenty…

The latest from the Will-Meek-Make-It-Meter: it’s less and less likely Meek will accomplish petition goal

in Peter/Statewide by

At this point, it does not appear likely Congressman Kendrick Meek will collect the requisite number of voters’ signatures to place his name on the ballot. According to the Florida Division of Elections, Meek has collected 37,420 verified signatures through March 1. How many RPOF credit cards did lawmakers have? Dems think they know

in Statewide by

The Republican Party of Florida still isn’t saying how many American Express cards were in the hands of state lawmakers before most of the cards were recalled last year – except to deny a claim by Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, that “half” the 26 Senate Republicans had one. Well, Florida Democratic Party communications director Eric Jotkoff thinks he knows. And in a Valentine’s Day card spoof aimed at Bill McCollum that thanks him for opposing the release of the party’s…

Images from Election 2009

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Those running for elected office in St. Petersburg were subjected to attending a gauntlet of sparsely-attended candidate forums, such as this one in Midtown. Not counting the candidates and their entourages, fewer than two dozen residents bothered to attend the meeting — about the same number of people who attended most of these events. In the run-up to the 2009 Municipal Elections, the City Council’s decision to vacate the sidewalk outside of BayWalk became a national story after a fight broke…
