Pinellas teachers union endorsements irritate teacher candidates

The teachers running for Pinellas school board this year are miffed they didn’t win backing from what would seem a natural ally: the teachers union. The union’s political action committee chose incumbent Linda Lerner over middle school teacher Brian Hawley and retired principal Terry Krassner over math/science coach Fonda Huff. The campaign finance reports aren’t in yet, but Pinellas school board candidate Terry Krassner tells supporters in her latest campaign note that she has already raised $15,000 from more than 100 individual contributors. A second candidate has dropped out of the race for the Pinellas School Board at-large District 2 seat. Jessica Summers of Largo notified the Pinellas Supervisor of Elections office last week that she won’t be running after all. The SOE’s Web site now lists her campaign as “inactive.” Linda Dabney Benware was the first candidate to file and then back out. Summers’ departure leaves two in the race: retired principal Terry Krassner and math/science coach Fonda Huff.

The latest candidate to file for the Pinellas School Board is Fonda Huff, mother of former Rays slugger Aubrey Huff. Huff, 54, of Largo, has been a teacher for 17 years (11 in Florida) and now works as a math/science coach, rotating between Northeast, Osceola, Seminole and St. Petersburg high schools.
