Hillsborough PTC Executive Director (and ride-sharing critic) says he met with Palm Beach County Commissioners as a “resource”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In recent weeks, agents with the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission (PTC) have resumed citing Uber and Lyft drivers for being out of compliance with the agency’s regulations. And after the Florida Legislature failed once again to address insurance and background regulations regarding such ridesharing companies earlier this  year, the PTC conducted an initial workshop last month to begin creating a new regulatory framework that applies equally to both Uber and Lyft, as well as the existing taxicab industry. PTC executive director Kyle Cockream has…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.11.16 – Carly and Chris bid adieu to the circus

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina have suspended their presidential campaigns. This reporter had the chance to see the New Jersey governor (yes, that is the day job he’s pretty much blown off for months) a week ago in Keene, N.H. The fun part about that was how intimate it was: It was a small crowd (maybe too small, an indication of how he was going to perform on Tuesday), but other than a few opening remarks, the 90-minute event was all about him…

Hillsborough PTC chief tells House committee he still wants ride-share drivers fingerprinted

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The executive director for the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission told Florida lawmakers on Wednesday he’s OK if they ban his agency from regulating ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft. Kyle Cockream came before the House Economics Committee to speak in support of the bill, sponsored by Republican Dana Young from Tampa and Plant City’s Dan Raulerson. Young told the committee that it’s substantially similar to a bill proposed by Fort Walton Beach Republican Matt Gaetz that overwhelmingly passed the entire House…

Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission aims to improve its image

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Victor Crist, chairman of the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission, and Kyle Cockream, its executive director, both pushed back Monday against St. Petersburg GOP state Sen. Jeff Brandes‘ call for an opinion from Attorney General Pam Bondi on the legality of the agency hiring a lobbying firm. Brandes request came days after a Fox-13 report questioned the agency’s using the lobbying firm of Corcoran and Johnston in Tallahassee. The story made it appear that the agency has only begun using such a firm now that state lawmakers are discussing dismantling it,…

Mitch Perry Report for 11.25.15 – And now there are 2 states who don’t automatically restore voting rights to ex-felons

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Outgoing Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear signed an executive order Tuesday immediately restoring voting rights to more than 100,000 ex-felons convicted of nonviolent offenses. “This disenfranchisement makes no sense,” Beshear, a Democrat, said in his announcement. “It makes no sense because it dilutes the energy of democracy, which functions only if all classes and categories of people have a voice, not just a privileged, powerful few. It makes no sense because it defeats a primary goal of our corrections system, which is to rehabilitate…

Jeff Brandes wants a legal opinion of Hillsborough PTC’s lobbying efforts

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jeff Brandes is taking another shot at the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission — this time over the fact that the PTC has hired a lobbyist. The St. Petersburg based state Senator has been calling for the demise of the agency for several years now, in part for their attempts to regulate ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft. Now he wants Attorney General Pam Bondi to review the statutes governing the agency to determine if thy are lawfully permitted to spend…

Dana Young not happy about PTC advertorial in Tampa Bay Business Journal

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Unlike some of her contemporaries, Tampa House Republican Dana Young isn’t looking to eliminate the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission. But she’s less than pleased with the agency upon learning that it recently purchased space in the Tampa Bay Business Journal for an advertorial spread explaining how the agency works. “WHY is the Hillsborough PTC advertising in the Tampa Bay Business Journal? If ad not free, we deserve an explanation,” Young tweeted out after seeing a link to the advertorial. “I’d like to know what…
