Dennis Ross glad he’s “still living in his district” after redistricting

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Republican U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross of Lakeland said he can live with the new shape of his 15th Congressional District approved by the Florida Supreme Court on Wednesday even though it cuts more of his home county out of his district. Like many Florida members of Congress, Ross’ district boundaries changed when the court certified the redistricting of congressional territories. He lost the cities of Bartow and Mulberry in Polk County from his district and Temple Terrace and Lutz in…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Democrats in Polk County have been working feverously to attract a local big name to one of the Florida Legislature seats they’d like to win next year. With courteous phone calls and pleasantries, the party’s selection committee has been courting former Circuit Judge Robert Doyel to challenge state Sen. Paula Dockery to abandon governor’s race

in Statewide by

Chris Ingram first reported what has now been confirmed by multiple sources: Republican gubernatorial candidate and state Sen. Paula Dockery (R-Lakeland) will abandon her longshot campaign for governor. Dockery’s campaign has been stuck in first gear since she announced her candidacy more than eight months ago. Since announcing, Dockery has had a lackluster fundraising performance. As something of a maverick in the state legislature, Dockery was never embraced by the GOP establishment or the lobbyists and other moneymen who can make a…

Paula Dockery comes to Tiger Bay

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

State Sen. Paula Dockery of Lakeland jumped into the governor’s race last November well aware that her opponent had a running start in name recognition, fund-raising and endorsements.   But she maintains that her notions of “common-sense conservatism” have been eclipsed in the party by a dictatorial style and undue deference to big business.  She opposed the Everglades land deal with U.S Sugar and voted against the bill abolishing teacher tenure this session.  In recent months, she has ramped up the…
