Can we please stop complaining about the new Pier and just get the dang thing built?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times recently reported that plans for the Pier and its day-to-day operations are “coming together behind the scenes.” Queue the cacophony of ridicule. Enter the calamitous noise of Rick Kriseman haters crying foul over a process too far out of the public eye. The group VoteonthePier.com took to Facebook Monday to lament these silly bells and whistles the city is promising with Pier Park. Before I dive into this, let me throw out a bit of a…

St. Pete City Council passes resolution supporting normalized relations with Cuba

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council wants the U.S. to normalize relations with Cuba. The board unanimously approved a resolution expressing support for a congressional measure that would completely restore normalized relations with the island nation. The move supports U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor’s Cuba Trade Act of 2015, which would remove presidential authority to impose sanctions on Cuba, restrictions on transactions, limitations on direct shipping and restrictions on remittances. It would also lift enforcement of an economic embargo and end the prohibition on…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The conventional wisdom in St. Petersburg is that there won’t be any movement regarding the status of the Tampa Bay Rays stadium situation until after the November 3 election. That’s because the last time the current City Council voted on a deal that would have allowed the team to explore stadium sites in Hillsborough County and guaranteed millions of dollars in payments if the Rays opt to leave, the members deadlocked 4-4, effectively quashing any such talks until the end of the baseball…

Rick Kriseman’s list of woes continues to grow

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

He’s not up for re-election until 2017, but already the cards are stacking up against St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman. The same mayor who always shows up in public with a beaming smile touting his Sunshine City also seems to have a dark cloud following him around. No matter how much good Kriseman accomplishes, he always seems to be moments away from damage control. Since taking office in 2013 Kriseman has faced mounting criticism for failing to garner enough support…

Mitch Perry Report for 9.25.15 — At least one MLB team wants to play in St. Pete (in the spring)

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The saga of where the Tampa Bay Rays search for a new home is going on eight years now. It was in November of 2007 when the Major League Baseball franchise held a news conference at the site of Al Lang Field to talk about building a 34,000-seat facility on the waterfront. As we all know, that didn’t happen, and for all the words, press conferences, committees, and votes that have been conducted in the eight years since, nothing else of substance…
