South Florida voters may get chance to vote on casinos

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

South Florida voters may get a chance to tell legislators whether they want Las-Vegas styled casinos. A Florida House panel on Thursday voted in favor of a stripped-down gambling bill. Legislators removed a provision to allow two casinos in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, but agreed to let county commissioners hold referendums on whether casinos should be allowed. Rep. Ritch Workman said he wants to know if people in “downtown Miami” support a casino. Even if voters say yes, the Legislature…

Push for resort casinos stalls in Florida Legislature

in Top Headlines by

The push to bring Las Vegas-resort-style casinos to South Florida is stalling again this year as the Florida Legislature remains divided over what type of gambling to allow in the state. A major gambling bill sponsored by a top House Republican that includes the casino proposal has yet to be voted on – and it may not get its first vote until sometime in April. The 60-day session ends May 1. A House panel held a four-hour workshop Thursday on…

When evaluating Dana Young’s gambling bill, it helps to think about ‘footprints’

in Top Headlines by

In the possibility that state Rep. Dana Young’s Gaming Control Act of 2015 passes the Legislature, one thing is sure: There will be significant changes in Florida gambling, although maybe not what many expect. First, South Florida may well become a home to two destination casinos, dog tracks and live greyhound races and slot machines proliferate into new parts of the state. Then again, the far-reaching bill might actually reduce gambling in Florida. If the bill is the “biggest expansion of…

NOAA confirms underwater oil plume

in Statewide by

A Florida research vessel has found an underwater plume of oil as deep as 3,300 feet and as far as 142 miles southeast of the BP oil spill. The finding confirms the fears of Florida scientists and political leaders who warn that oil has polluted deep waters, causing unknown environmental damage apart from the surface slick lapping at the shores of the Gulf Coast. The southeasterly location of the plume indicates it has moved in the direction of the loop…

Since she can’t pick Darryl Rouson, shouldn’t Alex Sink’s choice for LG be the ‘non-winner’ of Dave Aronberg vs. Dan Gelber?

in Peter/Statewide by

Watching (or is it witnessing?) Democratic state Rep. Darryl Rouson interact with gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink as she toured several African-American churches in south St. Petersburg, it’s obvious that the two would make a helluva political team. Rouson and Sink are everything the other is not, and therefore, together, they are greater than what either of them could be individually.  Sink is almost perfect, open, patient, temperate, understanding; Rouson is flawed, but redeemed, fiery, sharp, empathetic.  Sink has the background…

Suzanne Kosmas, Alan Grayson outpace GOP rivals

in Statewide by

News of a Republican surge in 2010 has yet to reach GOP donors in Central Florida. The area’s two freshman Democrats, U.S. Reps. Alan Grayson of Orlando and Suzanne Kosmas of New Smyrna Beach, far outpaced their Republican opponents in the final three months of 2009 and start the year with about $940,000 (Grayson) and $834,000 (Kosmas) in their campaign coffers. The one exception is Grayson challenger Armando Gutierrez, a Republican transplant from South Florida who raised more than $200,000…
