Where you at, Dan Ruth?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Daniel Ruth was/is a great columnist. I still don’t understand why the Tampa Tribune let him go. I have to believe his dismissal had more to do with the Trib, than with Ruth. So it was welcome news when the St. Petersburg Times announced that it was poaching Ruth from the Tribune/unemployment line. Ruth’s once-a-week column is often funny, occasionally hilarious and always insightful. Daniel Ruth is a terrible blogger. I don’t know why he doesn’t pull down his all…

Politicians blaming ‘those meddling bloggers’ for their problems

in Statewide by

At first I thought Senator Evan Bayh was just a pussy. I mean, how else do you describe a guy who, despite having won five statewide races and having $13 million in the bank, decided he no longer wishes to serve in the U.S. Senate partly because members no longer socialize with each other: When I was a boy, members of Congress from both parties, along with their families, would routinely visit our home for dinner or the holidays. This…

Is Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite retiring – or remarrying?

in Statewide by

There is speculation that U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite will announce her retirement at tonight’s Citrus County Lincoln Day Dinner. Or she could be announcing something loony. I don’t know why Ginny Brown-Waite wouldn’t run again after polling this well. Then again, as Eric Jotkoff points out, in 2006, Alex Sink got 49.7% and Bill Nelson got 58.7%. District has moved toward Dems in registration too. Updates: Tampa Tribune’s Will March thinks tonight’s major annoucement is more about her pending nuptials:…

Battleground Tampa Bay

in Peter/Statewide by

During last year’s St. Petersburg Mayoral Campaign, when I published blog post after blog post about that election, I took note of a subtle trend in how visitors were arriving on my site. As much as I would have liked otherwise, many of my readers were not coming directly to Saint Petersblog, rather they were coming to the site after searching for a particular term in Google, Yahoo, etc. Yes, there was a base of regular readers who arrived on…

Early voting begins in House D-58 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

From Mitch Perry: Early voting begins today in the House District 58 special election taking place in West Tampa, Seminole Heights, and northwest parts of Hillsborough County. The election is between Democrat Janet Cruz and Republican Hunter Chamberlin, with the winner replacing Democrat Mike Scionti, who stepped down from his seat back in December to take a job with the Obama administration in the Defense Department. Despite the fact that it’s a national holiday, don’t expect a stampede of voters…

No surprises from local newspapers: St. Pete Times plans to syndicate PolitiFact, Tribune sees ad revenues firming

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Two blurbs about the local newspapers come as no surprise. First, The St. Petersburg Times’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Politifact project is reportedly about to announce a syndication deal with several newspapers. Politico.com reports that the fact-checking site, which drew accolades for its work during the 2008 campaign — as well as the 2009 Pulitzer for national reporting — has continued to demonstrate its fact-checking skills well beyond the presidential race. “The intensity of the campaign really didn’t end,” Times Washington, D.C.,…
