‘We’re not partners. We’re not friends…’ or the toughest 48 hours of Crist’s career

in Peter/Statewide by

After a week in which he was labeled by the St. Petersburg Times’ as the “Loser of the Year” in Florida politics, it’s hard to imagine that things can get any worse for Charlie Crist. Unfortunately, he hasn’t seen anything yet. From the time the Quarterly Meeting of the Republican Party of Florida begins on Saturday to when the last vote is counted from the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee’s straw ballot, Charlie Crist’s campaign for the U.S. Senate could…

Assuming that preliminary reports of Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio’s fundraising are accurate, and that Crist raised another $1.5 million or so and Rubio doubled his previous effort of $340K, the epic struggle for the Republican nomination will carry on into the spring, when Rubio and his supporters in the Legislature will bog down Crist in a disastrous legislative session. Marco Rubio is not turning out to be like Tom Gallagher, who Crist knocked-out early with superior fundraising. Rubio is…

Southern Political Report: Charlie Crist-Marco Rubio battle marks the GOP’s ideological divide

Rush Limbaugh and Gen. Colin Powell campaign against each other on the airwaves. Yet there will be no settling the score between them at the ballot box. To decide their squabble about the definition and direction of the Republican Party, proxies will stand in next year in Florida’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate. Moderate Gov. Charlie Crist is the prohibitive favorite, of course. He has long since made the watershed rite of passage necessary to make his name known to…

Memo to all candidates: Stop using Top 10 lists

in Peter/Statewide by

The Buzz ruined my day by sharing Katherine Harris’ Top 10 Reasons Katherine Harris Will Beat Bill Nelson. For once, Adam Smith and I are in total agreement: this message is not at all funny. It’s actually kind of scary: Her #4 reason reads, “Katherine Harris is tested by fire.” Um, when. By sitting in an office and misinterpreting Florida election law? That’s being tested by fire? Anyway, this is the second time this month a major candidate has used…

Charlie Crist HAS thrown the knockout punch

in Peter/Statewide by

My argument (first said here on Florida News) for the last two weeks has been that Charlie Crist, by launching an early media blitz and a statewide bus tour, announcing Martinez’s endorsement, etc., has already won the race to be the Republican nominee for governor. A new poll bears out my theory that Crist has already thrown a knockout punch. “In a Republican primary, Attorney General Charlie Crist wins the nomination for Governor, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted for…

If Charlie Crist’s all-out TV ad blitz and statewide bus tour didn’t widen the gap between him and Tom Gallagher, the response by Gallagher’s campaign certainly exacerbated the situation. The Gallagher campaign sent protesters to a Crist rally, they distributed a very lame Top 10 list about Charlie’s bus tour, they’ve released useless media bulletins, etc., etc. It’s becoming apparent how bush-league Gallagher’s campaign is being run. Of course, I just hate the message Crist is delivering: “I’m a Ronald…
