St. Pete is launching a six-month pilot program Friday that allows downtown partygoers or sightseers to park in one of two parking garages and then use a shuttle to get from place to place. Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority CEO Brad Miller’s job is on the line. Miller was ranked below average by 10 of 15 board members. Despite the poor performance, the board isn’t making a move to get rid of the controversial leader. Nearly a third of PSTA’s fleet currently runs diesel-hybrid buses. Those are the models the agency has been purchasing almost exclusively…

Jeff Brandes proposes major red light camera reform

in Top Headlines by

State Sen. Jeff Brandes has proposed a series of amendments to an omnibus transportation bill that could have a drastic effect on red light cameras throughout the state. The amendments to Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles’ SB 1184 would reserve red light cameras as a last- resort safety measure at intersections prone to traffic accidents. “These cameras were initially proposed as programs designed to improve safety, but they’ve turned into nothing more than a back-door tax increase on Florida drivers,” Brandes said. “These…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pinellas County’s public transportation agency is one of only three in the nation to receive the Transportation Security Administration’s Gold Standard award more than once. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority also won the award last year. “It takes a lot of hard work to win this award and it’s reflective of the dedication of your agency,” said TSA Director of Surface Transportation Division Sonia Proctor during a PSTA board meeting Wednesday.
